Code P2123 2009 Ford Fusion Description

The Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor is an input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and used to determine the amount of torque requested by the operator. There are 2 pedal position signals in the sensor. Both signals, APP and APP2, have a positive slope (increasing angle, increasing voltage), but are offset and increase at different rates. The 2 pedal position signals make sure the PCM receives a correct input even if 1 signal has a concern. The PCM determines if a signal is incorrect by calculating where it should be, inferred from the other signals. If a concern is present with one of the circuits the other input is used. There are 2 reference voltage circuits, 2 signal return circuits, and 2 signal circuits (a total of 6 circuits and pins) between the PCM and the APP sensor assembly. The pedal position signal is converted to pedal travel degrees (rotary angle) by the PCM. The software converts these degrees to counts, which is the input to the torque based strategy. The P2123 code sets when The accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor 1 is out of self-test range high.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2123 2009 Ford Fusion Code

1. What does OBDII code P2123 mean on a 2009 Ford Fusion?

P2123 indicates a high voltage issue in the Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch 'D' circuit, which monitors the position of the accelerator pedal or throttle.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P2123 in a 2009 Ford Fusion?

Symptoms may include reduced engine performance, the vehicle entering "limp mode," an illuminated check engine light, and inconsistent throttle response.

3. What causes the P2123 code on a 2009 Ford Fusion?

Common causes include a faulty throttle/pedal position sensor, damaged or corroded wiring, a poor electrical connection, or issues with the vehicle's PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

4. Can I still drive my 2009 Ford Fusion with a P2123 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it’s not recommended due to potential safety concerns like reduced throttle control and the risk of the car entering limp mode.

5. How do I diagnose the P2123 code on a 2009 Ford Fusion?

Diagnosis involves checking the throttle/pedal position sensor for faults, inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, and testing the circuit with a multimeter for proper voltage and continuity.

6. How do I fix the P2123 issue on a 2009 Ford Fusion?

Repairs may include replacing the throttle/pedal position sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning electrical connections, or reprogramming or replacing the PCM if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to repair a P2123 code on a 2009 Ford Fusion?

The cost can range from $100 to $300 for sensor replacement or wiring repairs, while PCM replacement or reprogramming may cost $500 or more, depending on labor rates.

8. Can a bad throttle body cause the P2123 code in a 2009 Ford Fusion?

Yes, a malfunctioning throttle body or internal sensors within it can sometimes contribute to this issue, though it’s less common than sensor or wiring problems.

9. Will clearing the P2123 code fix the issue in a 2009 Ford Fusion?

Clearing the code without addressing the underlying issue will only temporarily turn off the check engine light, and the code is likely to return.

10. How can I prevent the P2123 code from recurring in my 2009 Ford Fusion?

Regularly inspect and maintain your vehicle’s electrical connections, wiring, and sensors, and address throttle or pedal position sensor issues promptly.
