Code P2122 Scion Description

The Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor is built into the accelerator pedal sensor assembly and has 2 sensor circuits: VPA (main) and VPA2 (sub). This sensor is a non-contact type sensor and uses Hall-effect elements in order to yield accurate signals even in extreme driving conditions, such as at high speeds as well as very low speeds. The voltage, which is applied to terminals VPA and VPA2 of the Engine Control Module (ECM), varies between 0.5 V and 4.75 V in proportion to the operating angle of the accelerator pedal (throttle valve). A signal from VPA indicates the actual accelerator pedal opening angle (throttle valve opening angle) and is used for engine control. A signal from VPA2 conveys the status of the VPA circuit and is used to check the accelerator pedal position sensor itself.
The ECM monitors the actual accelerator pedal opening angle (throttle valve opening angle) through the signals from VPA and VPA2 and controls the throttle actuator according to these signals.
When either the output voltage of VPA or VPA2 deviates from the standard range, or the difference between the output voltages of the 2 sensor circuits is more than the threshold, the ECM determines that there is a malfunction in the accelerator pedal position sensor. The ECM then illuminates the MIL and stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

Frequently Asked Questions about P2122 Scion Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2122 mean on a Scion?

Code P2122 indicates a low input signal from the Throttle Pedal Position Sensor/Switch 'D' circuit, which monitors the position of the accelerator pedal.

2. What are the symptoms of a P2122 code on a Scion?

Common symptoms include reduced engine power, poor throttle response, activation of "limp mode," and the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P2122 code on a Scion?

Possible causes include a faulty throttle pedal position sensor, damaged wiring or connections, a malfunctioning ECM, or corroded electrical terminals.

4. Can I drive my Scion with a P2122 code?

Driving with a P2122 code is not recommended, as it can result in limited engine power and unsafe driving conditions due to throttle inconsistencies.

5. How do I fix a P2122 code on my Scion?

Repairs may include replacing the throttle pedal position sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, cleaning corroded terminals, or reprogramming the ECM if needed.

6. How do I diagnose a P2122 code on my Scion?

Diagnosis typically involves checking the throttle pedal position sensor with a multimeter, inspecting wiring and connections for damage, and scanning the ECM for related codes.

7. How much does it cost to repair a P2122 code on a Scion?

Repair costs can range from $100 to $400, depending on whether the issue is a sensor replacement, wiring repair, or ECM reprogramming.

8. What happens if I ignore the P2122 code on my Scion?

Ignoring a P2122 code can lead to continued throttle response issues, reduced drivability, and potential safety hazards while driving.

9. Can a bad battery cause the P2122 code on a Scion?

While unlikely, a weak or bad battery could contribute to electrical issues that affect the throttle pedal position sensor circuit.

10. Will clearing the P2122 code fix the problem on my Scion?

Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the check engine light, but the underlying issue must be addressed to prevent the code from returning.
