Code P2118 Scion Description

The Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) has a dedicated power supply circuit. The voltage (+BM) is monitored and when the voltage is low (less than 4 V), the Engine Control Module (ECM) concludes that the ETCS has a fault and the current to the throttle actuator is cut. When the voltage becomes unstable, the ETCS itself becomes unstable. For this reason, when the voltage is low, the current to the actuator is cut. If repairs are made and the system has returned to normal, turn the ignition switch OFF. The ECM then allows current to flow to the actuator and the actuator can be restarted.
The ECM monitors the battery supply voltage applied to the throttle actuator. When the power supply voltage (+BM) is less than 4 V for 0.8 seconds or more, the ECM interprets this as an open in the power supply circuit (+BM). The ECM illuminates the MIL and stores the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

Frequently Asked Questions about P2118 Scion Code

What does the OBDII code P2118 mean on a Scion?

P2118 indicates an issue with the Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Motor Current Range/Performance, meaning the electronic throttle control system is detecting abnormal current or performance in the throttle actuator motor.

What are the common symptoms of the P2118 code on a Scion?

Symptoms include reduced engine power, the throttle not responding properly, the check engine light illuminating, and the vehicle possibly entering "limp" mode.

What causes the P2118 code on a Scion?

Common causes include a faulty throttle actuator motor, damaged or corroded wiring in the throttle control circuit, a malfunctioning throttle body, or an issue with the engine control module (ECM).

Can I drive my Scion with the P2118 code?

Driving with the P2118 code is not recommended, as the vehicle may experience reduced performance or enter limp mode, potentially creating unsafe driving conditions.

How is the P2118 code diagnosed on a Scion?

A mechanic will use a scan tool to retrieve the code, inspect the throttle body and wiring for damage or corrosion, test the throttle actuator motor, and check the ECM for faults.

How can I fix the P2118 code on my Scion?

Repairs may include cleaning or replacing the throttle body, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, replacing the throttle actuator motor, or reprogramming or replacing the ECM if necessary.

How much does it cost to fix the P2118 code on a Scion?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $150 to $800 depending on whether the throttle body, wiring, or ECM requires replacement or repair.

Can a dirty throttle body cause the P2118 code?

Yes, carbon buildup on the throttle body can interfere with the throttle actuator motor's performance and trigger the P2118 code.

Will clearing the code with a scan tool fix the problem?

Clearing the code will remove the check engine light temporarily, but the issue causing the code will still need to be addressed to prevent it from returning.

Is the P2118 code specific to Scion vehicles?

No, P2118 is a generic OBDII code and can appear on other makes and models, but the specific diagnosis and repair steps may vary.
