Code P20FA RAM Description

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) pressure buildup system to provide correct (overall) performance. If excessive air is detected during pressure buildup, the Purge Pump system draws fluid back into the DEF tank to remove the air. Once the purge is complete the pressure buildup is reinitialized. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the PCM detects an open on the DEF Purge Pump Control circuit for 2.0 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions about P20FA RAM Code

1. What does the OBDII code P20FA mean on a RAM vehicle?

P20FA indicates an issue with the Reductant Pump 2 Control Circuit, specifically an open circuit, which affects the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system.

2. What are the common symptoms of a P20FA code?

Symptoms include the check engine light turning on, DEF-related warning messages, poor engine performance, or the vehicle entering limp mode.

3. What causes the P20FA code to appear?

Common causes include faulty reductant pump wiring, a malfunctioning reductant pump, damaged electrical connectors, or a blown fuse in the control circuit.

4. Can I drive my vehicle with a P20FA code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, long-term operation with this code can lead to reduced performance and emissions compliance issues. It’s best to address it promptly.

5. How can I diagnose a P20FA code?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, checking the reductant pump for proper operation, and testing the circuit for continuity and voltage.

6. Does the P20FA code mean the reductant pump needs replacement?

Not necessarily. The issue could be due to a wiring problem, connector issue, or another electrical fault rather than the pump itself.

7. What tools are needed to troubleshoot a P20FA code?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for electrical testing, and possibly a wiring diagram for your vehicle’s DEF system.

8. How much does it cost to fix a P20FA code?

Repair costs can vary depending on the cause. Wiring repairs may cost less than $100, while reductant pump replacement could range from $500 to $1,000 or more.

9. Is P20FA a common issue on RAM trucks?

This code is not extremely common but can occur in vehicles with a DEF system, particularly if wiring or pump components degrade over time.

10. How can I prevent the P20FA code from recurring?

Regular maintenance of the DEF system, including inspecting wiring and connectors for damage, can help prevent this code from reappearing.
