P20EE GMC Code - SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

Quick Answer

The selective catalytic reduction system reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions by injecting a metered amount of diesel exhaust fluid or reductant into the exhaust gas stream entering the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Common causes include Exhaust Leaks, Fuel contamination, Faulty Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P20EE GMC Description

The selective catalytic reduction system reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions by injecting a metered amount of diesel exhaust fluid or reductant into the exhaust gas stream entering the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Within the selective catalytic reduction catalyst, the reductant reactswith the NOx to form nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Upstream and downstream NOx sensors provide the Engine Control Module (ECM) with engine-out and tailpipe-out NOx levels.
The ECM uses the 2 NOx sensors to control exhaust NOx levels. The NOx sensor measures the amount of NOx and oxygen in the exhaust system. The first NOx sensor is located at the outlet of the turbocharger and monitors the engine out NOx. The second NOx sensor is located in the DPF that monitors NOx levels exiting the DPF. The ECM varies the amount of reductant added by varying the reductant injector duty cycle in response to changes in engine exhaust out NOx levels.

Frequently Asked Questions about P20EE GMC Code

1. What are common symptoms of OBDII code P20EE GMC (SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1)?

Symptoms may include the check engine light illuminating, reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and potential emission issues.

2. What are possible causes of OBDII code P20EE GMC?

Potential causes may include a malfunctioning SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, faulty NOx sensor, exhaust leaks, contaminated DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), or issues with the catalytic converter.

3. How can I diagnose the cause of OBDII code P20EE GMC?

Diagnosing the code typically involves using a diagnostic scanner to retrieve specific data related to the SCR system, NOx sensor, and catalyst efficiency. Additionally, a visual inspection of the exhaust system for leaks or damage is recommended.

4. Can I continue driving with OBDII code P20EE GMC active?

While some drivers may choose to continue driving with the code active, it is advisable to address the issue promptly to prevent potential damage to the catalytic converter and ensure optimal engine performance.

5. How can I repair OBDII code P20EE GMC?

Repair options may include replacing the NOx sensor, inspecting and repairing any exhaust leaks, flushing and refilling the DEF system, or replacing the catalytic converter if necessary. It is recommended to follow the manufacturer's repair guidelines.

6. Is it possible to clear OBDII code P20EE GMC without addressing the underlying issue?

Clearing the code without resolving the root cause, such as a malfunctioning SCR system or faulty sensor, may result in the code reappearing once the system performs another self-check. It is best to address the issue for a long-term solution.

7. How can I prevent OBDII code P20EE GMC from recurring?

Regular maintenance of the SCR system, NOx sensor, and exhaust system components can help prevent the code from reoccurring. Additionally, using quality DEF and following recommended service intervals can aid in preventing issues.

8. Can a DIY enthusiast repair OBDII code P20EE GMC?

Some repairs related to this code, such as inspecting for exhaust leaks or checking DEF levels, may be manageable for DIY enthusiasts with the necessary tools and knowledge. However, more complex repairs involving sensor replacement or SCR system troubleshooting may require professional assistance.

9. Will OBDII code P20EE GMC cause my vehicle to fail emissions testing?

If left unresolved, the code may result in a failed emissions test due to the reduced efficiency of the SCR catalyst. It is recommended to address the issue before undergoing emissions testing to ensure compliance.

10. Does OBDII code P20EE GMC affect the overall performance of the vehicle?

Yes, this code can impact the vehicle's performance by triggering reduced engine power modes, affecting fuel efficiency, and potentially causing drivability issues. Resolving the underlying problem is crucial to restore optimal performance.
