Code P20BA 2017 GMC Sierra Description

As reductant will freeze at temperatures below -11°C (12°F), there are 2 reductant heaters located in the reductant tank. One heats the reductant in the tank, and one heats the reductant supplied to the reductant injector supply pipe. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the reductant temperature in the tank in order to determine if the reductant temperature is below its freeze point. If the ECM determines that the reductant may be frozen, it activates a "defrost strategy" energizing the reductant eater. This energizing action terminates when the temperature sensor measures a threshold value over which the heater must be deactivated.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM indicates the reductant tank heater resistance is greater or less than a calibrated value for greater than 8 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P20BA 2017 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P20BA indicate on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

The P20BA code indicates an issue with the Reductant Heater 1, which is responsible for heating the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to prevent freezing in cold temperatures.

What are common symptoms of the P20BA code?

Common symptoms include the check engine light turning on, DEF system warning messages, reduced engine performance, and difficulty with DEF dosing in cold conditions.

What causes the P20BA code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

The code is typically caused by a malfunctioning Reductant Heater 1, wiring issues such as damaged or shorted wires, or connector problems leading to poor electrical connections.

Can I drive my GMC Sierra with the P20BA code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, ignoring the code can lead to DEF system malfunctions, reduced emissions performance, and potential limp mode in certain conditions.

How is the P20BA code diagnosed?

Technicians use a scan tool to verify the code, inspect the wiring and connectors for damage, and test the functionality of the Reductant Heater 1 using a multimeter or specialized diagnostic equipment.

How much does it cost to repair the P20BA code?

Repair costs can vary, but replacing the Reductant Heater 1 typically costs between $300 and $600, depending on labor rates and parts availability.

Can a bad Reductant Heater cause other problems?

Yes, a malfunctioning heater can prevent DEF from thawing in cold weather, leading to improper DEF dosing and increased emissions, which may result in additional fault codes.

What tools are needed to repair the P20BA code?

Common tools include a scan tool for diagnostics, a multimeter for electrical testing, basic hand tools for parts replacement, and potentially a heat gun to thaw frozen DEF during troubleshooting.

Is the P20BA code covered under warranty for a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Depending on the mileage and warranty terms, the DEF system may be covered under emissions warranty, but it’s best to check with a GMC dealership for confirmation.

What maintenance can prevent the P20BA code?

Regular inspection of the DEF system, ensuring connectors are secure and free of corrosion, and using high-quality DEF fluid can help prevent heater-related issues.
