Code P20B2 RAM Description

The Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Tank Level Sensor and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Tank Temperature Sensor are a combination sensor used to measure the level and temperature of the fluid in the DEF Tank. Though combined, the level sensor and the temperature sensor operate independently of each other. Both sensors operate as a two-wire 5-Volt sensor. The DEF Tank Level Sensor is a 14-point magnetic reed switch sensor. The DEF Tank Temperature Sensor is a negative temperature coefficient sensor. The DEF Dosing Control Unit will illuminate the MIL lamp via the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) immediately after this diagnostic runs and fails. The DEF Dosing Control Unit will turn off the MIL lamp via the PCM immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes in three consecutive key cycles. This monitor runs a short time after Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank heating is commanded. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the DEF Dosing Control Unit does not detect a corresponding temperature increase by the DEF Tank Temperature Sensor after the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank heating is commanded on.

What does the OBDII code P20B2 mean?

The code P20B2 indicates an issue with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) reductant heater control valve's performance, which is part of the emissions system in vehicles equipped with diesel engines.

What are the common symptoms of the P20B2 code?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, reduced engine performance, or warnings related to the emissions system, such as DEF system failure messages.

What causes the P20B2 code to appear?

Common causes include a malfunctioning reductant heater control valve, damaged wiring or connectors in the DEF system, or issues with the DEF heater assembly.

Can the P20B2 code affect the vehicle’s performance?

Yes, if the DEF system isn't functioning properly, it can lead to reduced engine performance, limp mode, or failure to meet emissions standards.

How is the P20B2 code diagnosed?

Mechanics use an OBDII scanner to retrieve the code, inspect the DEF system components, check for wiring or connector damage, and test the functionality of the reductant heater control valve.

Can I drive my vehicle with the P20B2 code?

Driving is possible but not recommended, as prolonged operation with this code can lead to reduced performance, emissions system failure, or potential legal issues due to exceeding emissions limits.

How do you fix the P20B2 code?

Repairs may involve replacing the reductant heater control valve, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, or addressing issues with the DEF heater assembly.

Is the P20B2 code covered under warranty?

Coverage depends on your vehicle's warranty terms and whether the DEF system components are included under emissions-related warranties.

How much does it cost to repair the P20B2 code?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $300 to $800, depending on parts and labor, with the reductant heater being the most common replacement.
