Code P2090 Chevrolet Description

The camshaft position actuator system enables the Engine Control Module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve signal from the ECM is Pulse Width Modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid valve ON time. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.
Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve. The ECM controls the solenoid valve by grounding the control circuit with a solid-state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled-up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set when the ECM detects a short to ground in the CMP actuator solenoid circuits for greater than 1 second or a cumulative of 5 seconds, when the solenoid is commanded OFF.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2090 Chevrolet Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2090 mean for a Chevrolet?

P2090 indicates a low voltage issue in the exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoid valve control circuit on Bank 1.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P2090?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, rough idling, reduced fuel efficiency, difficulty starting, and an illuminated Check Engine Light.

3. What causes the P2090 code to appear in a Chevrolet?

Common causes include a faulty exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoid, damaged wiring or connectors, a failed PCM (Powertrain Control Module), or low engine oil pressure.

4. Can a dirty engine oil filter trigger the P2090 code?

Yes, a clogged or dirty oil filter can restrict oil flow to the actuator solenoid, leading to low voltage issues and triggering the code.

5. How can I diagnose the P2090 code?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, check the solenoid for proper operation, and ensure the engine oil level and quality are adequate.

6. Is it safe to drive with the P2090 code active?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it can cause further engine damage or lead to reduced performance over time.

7. How do I fix the P2090 code on my Chevrolet?

Repairs may involve replacing the exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoid, fixing damaged wiring, cleaning connectors, or replacing the engine oil and filter.

8. How much does it cost to fix the P2090 code?

The cost depends on the exact issue. Replacing the solenoid typically costs $150–$300, while wiring repairs or PCM replacement may vary.

9. Can low engine oil cause the P2090 code?

Yes, insufficient oil levels can affect the actuator solenoid's performance and trigger the code.

10. Does the P2090 code affect all Chevrolet models the same way?

While the basic meaning of the code is the same, the specific symptoms and repair process may vary depending on the Chevrolet model and engine type.
