Code P2088 2018 GMC Sierra Description

The Camshaft Position (CMP) actuator system enables the Engine Control Module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve signal from the ECM is Pulse Width Modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid valve ON time. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.
Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve. The ECM controls the solenoid valve by grounding the control circuit with a solid-state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to the ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects an open solenoid circuit in the CMP actuator for greater than 1 second or a cumulative of 5 seconds when the solenoid is commanded OFF.
The ECM monitors the control circuit of the CMP actuator solenoid for electrical faults. The ECM can determine if a control circuit is shorted low. If the ECM detects a fault with the CMP actuator solenoid control, DTC P2088 will set.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2088 2018 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P2088 mean on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

The P2088 code indicates a low voltage issue in the intake camshaft position actuator solenoid valve control circuit on Bank 1.

What are the common symptoms of code P2088 on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include rough idling, reduced engine performance, poor fuel economy, and the check engine light being illuminated.

What causes the P2088 code to appear on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Possible causes include a faulty intake camshaft position actuator solenoid, damaged wiring or connectors, a malfunctioning PCM, or low engine oil pressure.

Can low engine oil cause the P2088 code?

Yes, low engine oil level or pressure can affect the camshaft actuator's operation and trigger the P2088 code.

How do I diagnose the P2088 code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Start by checking the wiring and connectors for damage, inspect the solenoid for proper function, and verify the oil level and pressure.

Can I drive my 2018 GMC Sierra with the P2088 code?

Driving with this code is not recommended as it can lead to poor engine performance and potential damage if not addressed promptly.

How do I fix the P2088 code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the intake camshaft position actuator solenoid, repairing damaged wiring, or addressing low oil pressure issues.

Does the P2088 code always mean the solenoid is bad?

No, the issue could also stem from wiring problems, low oil pressure, or a PCM malfunction, so proper diagnosis is essential.

What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P2088 code?

Tools typically include an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for testing voltage and continuity, and basic hand tools for accessing components.

Will clearing the P2088 code solve the problem?
