P2087 Dodge Code - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent Bank 2 Sensor 2

Quick Answer

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continuously monitors the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) for proper circuit continuity and out of range high values. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) Bank 2 Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is Low - monitor the vehicle and repair when practical. The vehicle can usually be driven if no severe symptoms are present, but symptoms should be checked before extended driving.

Code P2087 Dodge Description

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continuously monitors the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) for proper circuit continuity and out of range high values. The EGTS is located in front of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and/or in front of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The EGTS detects exhaust gas temperature and converts it into a voltage and feeds back to the PCM with the voltage signal in order to control engine conditions to effectively reduce emissions. The PCM sets the P2087 OBDII code when the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor is out of factory specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2087 Dodge Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2087 mean on a Dodge vehicle?

P2087 indicates an intermittent issue in the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor Circuit for Bank 2, Sensor 2, which monitors exhaust gas temperatures to optimize emissions and engine performance.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P2087 on a Dodge?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, and in some cases, the vehicle may enter limp mode.

3. What causes the P2087 code on a Dodge?

Common causes include a faulty EGT sensor, damaged or corroded sensor wiring, loose electrical connections, or issues with the engine control module (ECM).

4. How do I diagnose code P2087 on my Dodge?

Start by using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, then inspect the EGT sensor, wiring, and connectors for damage or corrosion. You may need a multimeter to test the sensor's resistance and wiring continuity.

5. Can I drive my Dodge with a P2087 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, extended operation with this code can lead to increased emissions, reduced performance, and potential damage to the exhaust system or catalytic converter.

6. How do I fix the P2087 code on a Dodge?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty EGT sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, or reprogramming or replacing the ECM if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to fix code P2087 on a Dodge?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $100 to $300 for parts and labor, depending on whether the issue is with the sensor itself or the wiring and connectors.

8. Where is Bank 2, Sensor 2 located on a Dodge vehicle?

Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine opposite Bank 1 (usually the side without cylinder 1), and Sensor 2 is located downstream of the catalytic converter on that bank.

9. Can a faulty catalytic converter cause code P2087 on a Dodge?

While unlikely, a failing catalytic converter can sometimes contribute to abnormal exhaust gas temperatures, indirectly triggering this code.

10. What tools do I need to troubleshoot code P2087 on a Dodge?

You will need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter to test electrical components, and possibly basic hand tools to access and inspect the EGT sensor and wiring.
