P205F Ford Code - Reductant System Performance Bank 2

Quick Answer

The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions by injecting a metered amount of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or reductant into the exhaust gas stream entering the SCR catalyst. Common causes include Faulty Emission Reduction Fluid Injector, Emission Reduction Fluid Injector harness is open or shorted, Emission Reduction Fluid Injector circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P205F Ford Description

The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions by injecting a metered amount of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or reductant into the exhaust gas stream entering the SCR catalyst. Within the SCR catalyst, the DEF reacts with the NOx to form nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Upstream and downstream NOx sensors provide the Engine Control Module (ECM) with engine-out and tailpipe-out NOx levels. The ECM varies the amount of DEF added by varying the reductant injector duty cycle in response to changes in engine-out NOx levels.
The ECM supplies system voltage to the reductant pump motor. The ECM controls the solenoid by grounding the control circuit with a solid-state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage. The ECM supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. As the duty cycle increases, the output of the reductant pump increases.
The ECM detects the reductant pressure did not reach a calibrated pressure after an initial attempt to build up pressure. The ECM will then reduce reductant pressure and then attempt to build pressure again. If the ECM detects reductant pressure is still less than a calibrated threshold, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is set.

Frequently Asked Questions about P205F Ford Code

1. What does the OBDII code P205F mean on a Ford vehicle?

P205F indicates a "Reductant System Performance Bank 2" issue, meaning the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system is not functioning properly on the second bank of the engine.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P205F code on a Ford?

Symptoms may include the check engine light turning on, reduced engine performance, warning messages related to the DEF system, and possible failure to meet emissions standards.

3. What causes the P205F code to appear on a Ford vehicle?

Common causes include contaminated or low-quality DEF, a malfunctioning reductant injector, a faulty DEF pump, clogged DEF lines, or a failing NOx sensor.

4. Can I drive my Ford with the P205F code active?

While you may be able to drive temporarily, prolonged operation can lead to reduced performance, triggering limp mode, and failure to meet emissions standards, so repairs should be addressed promptly.

5. How do I diagnose the P205F code on a Ford?

Diagnosis typically involves scanning for additional trouble codes, checking DEF quality and levels, inspecting the reductant system components, and testing the NOx sensors for proper function.

6. What repairs can fix the P205F code on a Ford?

Repairs may include replacing contaminated DEF, repairing or replacing the reductant injector or pump, cleaning DEF lines, replacing a faulty NOx sensor, or updating the vehicle’s software.

7. How can I prevent the P205F code from occurring again?

Use high-quality DEF that meets manufacturer specifications, avoid letting DEF levels run low, and perform regular maintenance on the reductant system.

8. Is a software update required to fix the P205F code on a Ford?

In some cases, a software update for the engine control module (ECM) may be necessary to resolve the issue, especially if the problem is related to system calibration.

9. How much does it cost to fix the P205F code on a Ford?

Repair costs vary depending on the cause but can range from $100 for simple fixes like replacing DEF to over $1,000 for more complex repairs like replacing the DEF pump or NOx sensors.

10. Does the P205F code affect emissions testing?

Yes, the P205F code indicates an issue with the emissions control system, which can cause your vehicle to fail an emissions test if not resolved.
