P2036 Chevrolet Code - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High Bank 2 Sensor 2

Quick Answer

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continuously monitors the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) for proper circuit continuity and out of range high values. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) Bank 2 Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is Low - monitor the vehicle and repair when practical. The vehicle can usually be driven if no severe symptoms are present, but symptoms should be checked before extended driving.

Code P2036 Chevrolet Description

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continuously monitors the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) for proper circuit continuity and out of range high values. The EGTS is located in front of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and/or in front of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The EGTS detects exhaust gas temperature and converts it into a voltage and feeds back to the PCM with the voltage signal in order to control engine conditions to effectively reduce emissions. The PCM sets the P2036 OBDII code when the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor is out of factory specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2036 Chevrolet Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2036 indicate on a Chevrolet?

The P2036 code on a Chevrolet indicates that there is an issue with the exhaust gas temperature sensor circuit, specifically reporting a high voltage condition in Bank 2 Sensor 2.

2. Where is the Bank 2 Sensor 2 exhaust gas temperature sensor located?

In Chevrolet vehicles, Bank 2 typically refers to the side of the engine that does not contain the first cylinder. Sensor 2 is usually located downstream in the exhaust system, possibly after the catalytic converter.

3. What are common symptoms of the P2036 code in a Chevrolet?

Common symptoms include a check engine light, reduced engine performance, and sometimes an unusual smell from the exhaust. In some cases, there might also be increased fuel consumption.

4. What can cause the P2036 code to appear in a Chevrolet?

Causes of the P2036 code can include a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor, wiring issues like shorts or corroded connections, or problems with the exhaust system itself, such as leaks.

5. How can I troubleshoot and fix the P2036 code on my Chevrolet?

To troubleshoot the P2036 code, start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion. If the wiring is intact, consider testing or replacing the exhaust gas temperature sensor itself.

6. Is it safe to drive my Chevrolet with the P2036 code?

While it might be safe to drive for a short distance, driving with the P2036 code can lead to further damage to the engine or exhaust system if not addressed promptly. It's advisable to diagnose and repair the issue as soon as possible.

7. How do I reset the P2036 code on a Chevrolet?

After repairing the issue, the P2036 code can be reset using an OBDII scan tool. However, if the underlying problem is not fixed, the code is likely to return.

8. What tools are necessary to diagnose the P2036 code on a Chevrolet?

Diagnosing the P2036 code typically requires an OBDII scanner capable of reading Chevrolet-specific codes, a multimeter for testing wiring continuity and voltages, and basic hand tools to access the sensor.

9. Can a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor affect vehicle emissions?

Yes, a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor can affect the efficiency of the emission control system, leading to increased pollutant emissions and potentially causing the vehicle to fail emissions testing.
