Code P1AFE Description

The drive motor generator Power Inverter Control Module (PIM) contains two Motor Control Modules (MCMs) and the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM). Each MCM operates its respective drive motor generator based upon HPCM commands. Each MCM controls the speed, direction and output torque of its respective drive motor generator through the sequencing actuation of high current switching transistors called insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). Each drive motor generator operates utilizing 3 phase Alternating Current (AC) electricity. Each IGBT operates a single phase of the drive motor generator. Each phase is individually identified as U, V and W. Each MCM monitors the current of each phase in order to detect PIM overcurrent conditions.
When high voltage is enabled, each MCM supplies its respective drive motor generator with just enough current to energize the magnetic field even when no motor generator torque is required. The MCM monitors the phase current sensors for this minimal current to ensure the drive motor phase circuits are functioning properly.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1AFE Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1AFE mean?

P1AFE refers to a Drive Motor 2 Control Module Shutdown Performance issue, indicating that the control module for the second drive motor is not functioning as expected during a shutdown process.

2. What are common symptoms of the P1AFE code?

Symptoms may include reduced vehicle performance, limited or no electric motor operation, the illumination of the check engine light, and possible issues with hybrid or EV system functionality.

3. What causes the P1AFE code to appear?

Common causes include software malfunctions in the control module, electrical issues like damaged wiring or connectors, or internal failure of the Drive Motor 2 itself.

4. Can I still drive my vehicle with the P1AFE code?

Driving may be possible, but it’s not recommended as it could lead to further damage or reduced performance of the hybrid or electric drive system.

5. How is the P1AFE code diagnosed?

A technician will use a scan tool to read the code, inspect wiring and connections to the Drive Motor 2 Control Module, and perform tests on the motor and control module for faults.

6. What repairs are needed to fix the P1AFE code?

Repairs may include updating the control module software, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, or replacing the Drive Motor 2 Control Module if it’s defective.

7. Can a bad battery cause the P1AFE code?

While unlikely, issues with the hybrid or EV battery system can indirectly affect the control module’s performance and should be inspected as part of the diagnosis.

8. How much does it typically cost to fix the P1AFE code?

Repair costs can vary widely but may range from $200 to $1500 depending on whether the issue requires simple wiring repairs or full module replacement.

9. How can I prevent the P1AFE code from occurring?

Regular maintenance of the hybrid or EV system, ensuring proper software updates, and inspecting electrical connections can help prevent this issue.

10. Is the P1AFE code specific to certain vehicles?

Yes, this code is typically found in hybrid or electric vehicles with multiple drive motors, and its occurrence may depend on the manufacturer and model.
