Code P1AE6 Description

The Battery Energy Control Module will diagnose its own systems and determine when a fault condition is present. Diagnostics and system status is communicated from the battery energy control module to the vehicle control interface module through serial data. The vehicle control interface module is the host controller for Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) information.
The vehicle is equipped with a high voltage isolation monitor feature. The purpose of the high voltage isolation circuit is to test the resistance between the high voltage positive and negative direct current (DC) bus and chassis ground. The battery energy control module only runs this test when the ignition transitions from ON to OFF and the high voltage contactor relays have opened. The battery energy control module has an internal isolation sensor that measures the resistance between the high voltage DC positive and negative bus and chassis ground. The battery energy control module runs an internal self check of this sensor circuit. The battery energy control module sends an AC signal over the DC bus and monitors its amplitude. A low amplitude or collapsed return signal indicates a loss of resistance to chassis ground and a loss of isolation will be indicated by the hybrid powertrain control module 2. Because this diagnostic runs after system power down, the diagnostic status does not get reported until the next key cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1AE6 Code

What does the OBDII code P1AE6 mean?

The P1AE6 code indicates an issue with the Battery Energy Control Module detecting a fault in the Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Isolation Sensor Circuit, which monitors battery voltage isolation.

What are the common symptoms of code P1AE6?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, reduced hybrid or EV performance, limited charging capability, and possible vehicle shutdown in severe cases.

What causes the P1AE6 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty voltage isolation sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a defective Battery Energy Control Module, or issues with the hybrid/EV battery pack itself.

Can I drive my vehicle with the P1AE6 code?

Driving with this code is not recommended as it may lead to further damage to the hybrid/EV system and potential safety risks due to compromised battery isolation.

How is the P1AE6 code diagnosed?

A technician will use a scan tool to confirm the code, inspect the wiring and connectors for damage, test the voltage isolation sensor, and check the Battery Energy Control Module for faults.

What repairs are needed to fix the P1AE6 code?

Repairs may include replacing a faulty voltage isolation sensor, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, reprogramming or replacing the Battery Energy Control Module, or addressing hybrid/EV battery pack issues.

How much does it cost to fix the P1AE6 code?

Repair costs can vary but generally range from $200 to $1,000 or more, depending on whether the issue is with the sensor, wiring, or control module.

Can a low or discharged hybrid battery cause the P1AE6 code?

While a low battery alone may not trigger this code, issues with the hybrid battery's integrity or isolation could contribute to the problem.

Does the P1AE6 code require any special tools to diagnose?

Yes, diagnosing this code typically requires a professional scan tool capable of reading hybrid/EV system data and specialized tools to test battery isolation and circuit integrity.

Is the P1AE6 code specific to certain vehicle makes or models?

This code is more commonly found in hybrid and electric vehicles and may be specific to manufacturers like GM, Ford, or Toyota, depending on their Battery Energy Control Module design.
