P1A98 Chevrolet Code - Starter/Generator Control Module Hybrid Battery Voltage Sensor Circuit High Voltage

Quick Answer

The purpose of the Accessory Power Module (APM), integral to the Starter/Generator Control Module (SGCM), is to control the amount and direction of energy flowing between the 42 volts DC and 14 volts DC buses via the APM, bi-directional 42 volts DC to 14 volts DC converter. Common causes include Faulty Starter/Generator Control Module (SGCM), Starter/Generator Control Module (SGCM) harness is open or shorted, Starter/Generator Control Module (SGCM) circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P1A98 Chevrolet Description

The purpose of the Accessory Power Module (APM), integral to the Starter/Generator Control Module (SGCM), is to control the amount and direction of energy flowing between the 42 volts DC and 14 volts DC buses via the APM, bi-directional 42 volts DC to 14 volts DC converter. All APM functions shall only be run when in the enable mode. APM current shall be defined as the current flowing through the outputs. The current shall be bi-directional, with negative current representing 14-42 volts direction, and positive current representing the 42-14 volts direction.
The Starter/Generator Control Module (SGCM) controls 2 functions in these DTCs. DC voltage is transformed into three phase AC power to the electric machine interface. In this case, energy flows from 36 volt to phase1, phase2 and phase3. The second case shall be generating, where the three phase AC power is used to charge the 36 volt battery pack. In this case, energy flows from phase1, phase2 and phase3 to 36 volts.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1A98 Chevrolet Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1A98 mean for a Chevrolet vehicle?

P1A98 indicates an issue with the Starter/Generator Control Module detecting high voltage in the hybrid battery voltage sensor circuit.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P1A98 code?

Symptoms may include the check engine light turning on, reduced fuel efficiency, limited hybrid system performance, or a vehicle not switching between gas and electric modes properly.

3. What causes the P1A98 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty hybrid battery voltage sensor, wiring issues such as damaged or corroded connections, or a malfunctioning Starter/Generator Control Module.

4. Can I still drive my Chevrolet with the P1A98 code?

Driving may still be possible, but it’s not recommended as it can lead to further damage to the hybrid system or reduced vehicle performance.

5. How do you diagnose the P1A98 code?

Diagnosis typically involves using a scan tool to confirm the code, inspecting the hybrid battery voltage sensor and associated wiring, and testing the Starter/Generator Control Module.

6. What repairs are needed to fix the P1A98 code?

Repairs may include replacing the hybrid battery voltage sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, or reprogramming or replacing the Starter/Generator Control Module.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P1A98 code?

Repair costs vary depending on the cause but can range from $150 for wiring repairs to over $1,000 for module replacement.

8. Can a low hybrid battery charge cause the P1A98 code?

While unlikely, issues with the hybrid battery itself, such as imbalanced cells, could indirectly trigger voltage sensor errors.

9. Does clearing the P1A98 code fix the issue?

Clearing the code will not fix the underlying problem. Proper diagnosis and repair are necessary to prevent the code from returning.

10. Can a software update resolve the P1A98 code?

In some cases, a software update for the Starter/Generator Control Module may resolve the issue if it’s related to incorrect module programming.
