Code P1824 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The internal mode switch indicates the Transmission Control Module (TCM) which gear position the vehicle operator has selected. The internal mode switch consists of 5 separate hall effect switches. Each hall effect switch is supplied with a 9 V reference circuit and a signal circuit from the TCM. Each signal circuit for each gear selector position will have either a voltage reading of 0.70-0.96 V indicating On or 1.68-2.38 V indicating Off. The voltage values on each internal mode switch circuit will change and are dependent on the position of the gear selector. The state of each internal mode switch A/B/C/P/S signal circuit is displayed on the scan tool. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM has detected the internal mode switch P signal circuit voltage is less than 0.7 V, for 1.75 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1824 2017 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1824 mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P1824 indicates that the Internal Mode Switch (IMS) "P" circuit is experiencing low voltage, which may affect the transmission's ability to detect the proper gear selection.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P1824 in a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include the transmission being stuck in Park, difficulty shifting gears, an illuminated check engine light, and erratic transmission behavior.

3. What causes the P1824 code to appear on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

This code is commonly caused by a faulty Internal Mode Switch, damaged wiring or connectors in the switch circuit, or issues with the transmission control module (TCM).

4. Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with the P1824 code?

Driving with the P1824 code is not recommended, as it may lead to further transmission issues or leave the vehicle stuck in Park or another gear.

5. How do I diagnose the P1824 code in my 2017 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis typically involves inspecting the IMS wiring and connectors for damage, testing the IMS for proper function, and using a scan tool to monitor voltage readings in the "P" circuit.

6. How can I fix the P1824 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the Internal Mode Switch, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, or reprogramming or replacing the TCM if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P1824 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can vary, but replacing the Internal Mode Switch typically ranges from $200 to $500, including parts and labor.

8. Can a dead battery cause the P1824 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

While unlikely, a severely low or dead battery can cause electrical issues that might trigger the code. Checking the battery and charging system is a good first step.

9. Does the P1824 code always mean the Internal Mode Switch is faulty?

Not necessarily. The issue could also stem from damaged wiring, poor connections, or a malfunctioning TCM rather than the switch itself.

10. Will clearing the P1824 code fix the issue on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the check engine light, but it won’t resolve the underlying problem. Proper diagnosis and repair are required to prevent the code from returning.
