Code P1650 Chevrolet Description

The Quad Driver Module (QDM) is an electronic switch that completes a ground circuit when switched on. The QDM independently controls 4 separate outputs. A load is connected between battery voltage and the QDM allowing QDM driver to control the output. Each QDM has a fault detection logic that compares its input and output voltages. The logic expects to measure less than 3 volts when the QDM is on and greater than 7 volts when off. The QDM has only one fault that will detect a fault on any of the 4 outputs. The scan tool can be used to cycle the outputs on and off. It can also perform automated test which can isolate the faulty circuit.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1650 and P1651 will set if there is an open, short to ground or short to voltage on any of the QDM output circuits, faulty MIL circuit, faulty upshift light circuit, faulty cooling fan relay circuit or A/C relay circuit. Fault detected for 5 seconds will set P1651. Fault detected for 20 seconds will set P1650. The QDM circuit is continuously checked when the engine is running.
The Quad Driver Module (QDM) is part of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Frequently Asked Questions about P1650 Chevrolet Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1650 mean on a Chevrolet?

P1650 on a Chevrolet indicates a "PCM Output Controls Fault," meaning the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an issue with one or more output control circuits.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P1650 code in a Chevrolet?

Common symptoms include the Check Engine Light turning on, reduced engine performance, erratic idle, or failure of certain electrical components like relays or solenoids.

3. What causes the P1650 code to appear in a Chevrolet?

The P1650 code can be caused by damaged wiring, a faulty PCM, a malfunctioning sensor or relay, or poor electrical connections in the output control circuits.

4. Can I drive my Chevrolet with the P1650 code active?

Driving with the P1650 code is not recommended, as it can lead to further damage or unpredictable vehicle performance due to malfunctioning output controls.

5. How do I diagnose the P1650 code on a Chevrolet?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion. Use a multimeter to test circuit continuity and verify the integrity of related relays and sensors. If no issues are found, test the PCM itself.

6. What are the most common fixes for the P1650 code in a Chevrolet?

Common fixes include repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, replacing malfunctioning relays or sensors, or replacing the PCM if it is determined to be faulty.

7. How much does it cost to repair the P1650 code on a Chevrolet?

Repair costs vary depending on the issue. Wiring or connector repairs may cost $50-$150, while PCM replacement can range from $500 to $1,200.

8. Can a faulty PCM alone cause the P1650 code on a Chevrolet?

Yes, a faulty PCM can cause the P1650 code, although it is less common. Always rule out wiring and sensor issues before replacing the PCM.

9. Will clearing the P1650 code fix the problem in my Chevrolet?

Clearing the code will turn off the Check Engine Light temporarily, but the underlying issue must be resolved to prevent the code from returning.

10. Are there any preventive measures to avoid the P1650 code on a Chevrolet?

Regular maintenance, including inspecting wiring and connectors for wear or corrosion and addressing electrical issues promptly, can help prevent the P1650 code.
