Code P163A Mercury Description

With the engine running, the charging system warning indicator is off. The circuit from the battery B+ to the generator regulator is 13-15 volts. This voltage feedback is used by the regulator to maintain the battery voltage at the desired set-point. The S (stator) circuit (internal to the generator) is used to monitor generator operation. This circuit and other regulator internal conditions are checked by the regulator to allow the PCM to turn off the charging system warning indicator by sending a message over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus to the Instrument Cluster (IC). The positive battery output (B+) circuit is the generator output supplied to the battery and electrical system. For dual generator systems, these circuits are duplicated. Both generator regulators send a signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to allow the PCM to turn off the charging system warning indicator. In dual generator systems, the PCM keeps the secondary generator in a standby state where it does not generate current unless the primary generator is generating full power and more current is needed to support the vehicle loads. This may make it appear that the secondary generator is not working when vehicle loads are not large. It is important to note that a normal operational state of the charging system is for the secondary generator to not produce current.

Frequently Asked Questions about P163A Mercury Code

1. What does the OBDII code P163A mean on a Mercury vehicle?

P163A refers to a fault in the Secondary Generator Control Circuit, indicating an issue with the system that manages an auxiliary or secondary generator.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P163A code?

Symptoms may include the battery warning light illuminating, decreased charging system performance, dim or flickering lights, or electrical accessories malfunctioning.

3. What causes the P163A code to trigger in a Mercury vehicle?

Common causes include a faulty secondary generator, damaged wiring or connectors in the control circuit, a malfunctioning voltage regulator, or issues with the vehicle's PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

4. Can I drive my Mercury with the P163A code active?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, ignoring this code can result in battery depletion and potential stalling, especially if the charging system fails completely.

5. How is the P163A code diagnosed?

A mechanic will typically use a scan tool to confirm the code, inspect the wiring and connectors, test the secondary generator, and evaluate the voltage regulator and PCM functionality.

6. How can I fix the P163A code on my Mercury?

Repairs may include replacing the secondary generator, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, replacing the voltage regulator, or reprogramming or replacing the PCM.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P163A code?

Repair costs can vary, ranging from $100 to $500 or more, depending on whether the issue is due to wiring repairs or component replacement like the generator or PCM.

8. Can a weak battery cause the P163A code to appear?

While a weak battery alone may not trigger this code, it can exacerbate charging system issues, so the battery should be tested as part of the diagnosis.

9. Does the P163A code indicate a problem with the primary alternator?

No, the P163A code specifically relates to the secondary generator or its control circuit, not the primary alternator.

10. Is it necessary to reprogram the PCM when fixing the P163A code?

Reprogramming the PCM may be necessary if the fault lies in its software or if it has been replaced as part of the repair process.
