Code P1518 Mazda Description

The Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) is an electrically actuated system consisting of a motorized actuator with an attaching linkage for each housing on each bank. The linkage attaches to the housing butterfly plate levers. Each IMRC housing is an aluminum casting with two intake air passages for each cylinder. One passage is always open, and the other is opened and closed with a butterfly valve plate. The housing uses a return spring to hold the plates closed. The motorized actuator houses internal switches to provide feedback to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), indicating linkage and plate position. Under about 3000 rpm, the vacuum solenoid will be energized. This will allow the manifold vacuum to be applied and the butterfly valve plates to stay closed. Above approximately 3000 rpm, the vacuum solenoid will be de-energized. This will allow a vacuum to vent from the actuator and the butterfly valve plates to open. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) sets when the IMRC is commanded close, but the IMRC monitor indicates open.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1518 Mazda Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1518 mean on a Mazda?

P1518 indicates that the Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) system is stuck in the open position, which can affect engine performance and efficiency.

2. What are the symptoms of a P1518 code on a Mazda?

Common symptoms include rough idling, reduced engine power, poor fuel economy, and possibly an illuminated check engine light.

3. What causes the P1518 code to appear on a Mazda?

The code can be caused by a faulty IMRC actuator, broken or disconnected linkage, carbon buildup in the intake manifold, or wiring and electrical issues in the IMRC system.

4. Can I drive my Mazda with a P1518 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, driving with a P1518 code can lead to reduced performance and potential long-term engine damage if not addressed promptly.

5. How do I diagnose a P1518 code on a Mazda?

Diagnosis involves inspecting the IMRC actuator and linkage for damage, testing the actuator's electrical connections, and checking for carbon buildup in the intake manifold.

6. What tools do I need to fix a P1518 code on a Mazda?

You may need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for electrical testing, basic hand tools, and possibly cleaning products to remove carbon deposits.

7. How much does it cost to fix a P1518 code on a Mazda?

Repair costs vary but may range from $100 to $500 depending on whether the IMRC actuator needs replacement or if cleaning and adjustments are sufficient.

8. Can a dirty throttle body cause a P1518 code?

A dirty throttle body is not a direct cause of P1518, but carbon buildup in the intake manifold can contribute to IMRC issues, which may trigger this code.

9. How can I prevent a P1518 code from occurring again?

Regular maintenance, including cleaning the intake manifold and ensuring proper operation of the IMRC system, can help prevent future issues.

10. Does resetting the check engine light fix a P1518 code?

Resetting the light may temporarily clear the code, but it won’t fix the underlying issue causing the IMRC system to remain stuck open.
