The Knock Sensor contains a piezo crystal. When combustion knock occurs in an engine, a distinct noise is produced. The sensor turns vibrations from this noise into an electrical signal. The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses the signal to retard ignition timing and restore normal combustion in the affected engine cylinder. The Knock Sensor may be supplied with a reference voltage from the engine ECM. This allows the ECM to monitor the continuity of the Knock Sensor circuit.
