Code P1299 Lincoln Description

The Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) Sensor is a thermistor device in which resistance changes with temperature. The electrical resistance of a thermistor decreases as temperature increases, and the resistance increases as the temperature decreases. The varying resistance affects the voltage drop across the sensor terminals and provides electrical signals to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) corresponding to temperature.
The CHT sensor is installed in the aluminum cylinder head and measures the metal temperature. The CHT sensor can provide complete engine temperature information and can be used to infer coolant temperature. If the CHT sensor conveys an overheating condition to the PCM, the PCM initiates a fail-safe cooling strategy based on information from the CHT sensor. A cooling system concern such as low coolant or coolant loss could cause an overheating condition. As a result, damage to major engine components could occur. Using both the CHT sensor and fail-safe cooling strategy, the PCM prevents damage by allowing air cooling of the engine and limp home capability.

  • Yes, that’s the one I replaced. Driving home (10 minutes) it appeared fine but started to overheat as I got home (we live up top of a hill). I had the AC on to replicate the problem, and it did. The AC blew hot, btw, never cooled.

    So.. it’s clearly something else.

  • Have you replaced the thermostat? bad thermostat could trigger the code and cause the overheat problem.

  • You have to remove the lower intake manifold to access the sensor (See image below). Before you replace the sensor, make sure there are no coolant leaks and that the radiator fans are working properly. Also, I recommend changing the thermostat before changing the sensor.

  • My 06 ls v8 upper radiator hose burst, got an audible warning to check engine temp, saw gauge pegged, pulled over and shut engine off. After replacing upper and lower hoses and replacing coolant and bleeding system and then test drive I then noticed MIL on. Checking w/OBDII reader showed P1299. I didn't notice the MIL till after test drive. I cleared MIL and will see if it returns.

    Coolant is fine, engine is not over heating but a FAN keeps kicking on. Check engine light turned on while driving and vehicle stalled. I did a Reset code with OBD2 scanner and was able to get vehicle home. Initially started with heater blowing cold air, not getting hot. I will also be replacing the thermostat.

  • CHT sensor is located in left cylinder below intake manifold. The P1299 code Indicates that an engine overheat condition was detected by the CHT sensor. Before replacing the sensor, check if your vehicle is overheating. If is "NOT" overheating, then the problem is the sensor. If the engine is overheating, then the problems is something else, like the thermostat or water pump.
