Code P128F 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The fuel rail pressure sensor transmits fuel pressure and temperature information by serial data. The fuel rail pressure sensor internal microprocessor allows 4 separate sensor outputs from one 3 wire sensor. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the fuel rail pressure sensor with a 5 V reference circuit, a low reference circuit, and an asynchronous signal/serial data circuit. The asynchronous signal means communication is only going from the fuel rail pressure sensor to the ECM. The ECM decodes the serial data signal into separate voltages which are displayed on a scan tool as the voltage inputs from the Fuel Temperature Sensor, Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor 2.

Frequently Asked Questions about P128F 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

What does the OBDII code P128F mean on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

P128F indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an incorrect message counter between the fuel rail pressure sensors 1 and 2, which can affect fuel system performance.

What are the common symptoms of P128F in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common symptoms include reduced engine performance, poor fuel efficiency, difficulty starting the engine, and the illumination of the check engine light.

What causes the P128F code to appear on the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

The code can be caused by faulty fuel rail pressure sensors, damaged electrical connectors or wiring, a software issue in the ECM, or a failing ECM.

Can I drive my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado with the P128F code?

Driving with the P128F code is not recommended, as it can lead to reduced performance and potential engine damage if the fuel delivery system is not functioning correctly.

How do I diagnose the P128F code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Diagnosis involves checking the fuel rail pressure sensors, inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, and using a scan tool to review live data and compare fuel pressure readings.

What repairs can fix the P128F code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repairs may include replacing faulty fuel rail pressure sensors, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, updating the ECM software, or replacing the ECM if necessary.

How much does it cost to repair the P128F code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

The cost varies depending on the repair, with sensor replacement ranging from $200 to $400 and ECM replacement potentially costing $1,000 or more.

Can a dirty fuel system cause the P128F code in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

While a dirty fuel system is not a direct cause of this code, it can contribute to fuel pressure irregularities, which may exacerbate the issue.

Is a software update a possible solution for the P128F code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Yes, a software update for the ECM may resolve communication or compatibility issues causing the code.

Do I need to replace both fuel rail pressure sensors for the P128F code?

Not necessarily; you should test both sensors and replace only the one that is faulty unless both show signs of failure.
