Code P128D 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The fuel rail pressure sensor transmits fuel pressure and temperature information by serial data. The fuel rail pressure sensor internal microprocessor allows 4 separate sensor outputs from one 3 wire sensor. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the fuel rail pressure sensor with a 5 V reference circuit, a low reference circuit, and an asynchronous signal/serial data circuit. The asynchronous signal means communication is only going from the fuel rail pressure sensor to the ECM. The ECM decodes the serial data signal into separate voltages which are displayed on a scan tool as the voltage inputs from the Fuel Temperature Sensor, Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor 2.

Frequently Asked Questions about P128D 2016 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P128D mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

The code P128D indicates an issue with the Fuel Rail Temperature Sensor 2, specifically that its signal message counter is incorrect or out of expected range.

2. What are the symptoms of the P128D code in a GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include a check engine light, reduced engine performance, poor fuel efficiency, and potential stalling or hesitation during acceleration.

3. What causes the P128D code to appear?

The code can be triggered by a faulty fuel rail temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a malfunctioning ECM, or communication errors between the sensor and ECM.

4. Can I drive my 2016 GMC Sierra with the P128D code?

While the truck may still be drivable, it is not recommended as it could lead to further engine performance issues or damage.

5. How do I diagnose the P128D code?

Diagnosis involves checking the fuel rail temperature sensor’s wiring and connectors for damage, testing the sensor itself, and verifying the data being sent to the ECM.

6. How do I fix the P128D code on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty fuel rail temperature sensor, repairing damaged wiring, or updating/replacing the ECM if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to repair a P128D code?

Repair costs can vary but typically range from $150 to $300 for parts and labor, depending on whether the sensor or wiring needs replacement.

8. Can a bad fuel rail temperature sensor cause engine damage?

Yes, a malfunctioning sensor can lead to incorrect fuel mixture calculations, potentially causing long-term engine damage if left unaddressed.

9. Will clearing the code fix the P128D issue?

Clearing the code may turn off the check engine light temporarily, but the underlying problem must be resolved to prevent the code from returning.

10. Is the P128D code specific to GMC Sierra trucks?
