Code P128D 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The fuel rail pressure sensor transmits fuel pressure and temperature information by serial data. The fuel rail pressure sensor internal microprocessor allows 4 separate sensor outputs from one 3 wire sensor. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the fuel rail pressure sensor with a 5 V reference circuit, a low reference circuit, and an asynchronous signal/serial data circuit. The asynchronous signal means communication is only going from the fuel rail pressure sensor to the ECM. The ECM decodes the serial data signal into separate voltages which are displayed on a scan tool as the voltage inputs from the Fuel Temperature Sensor, Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor 2.

Frequently Asked Questions about P128D 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P128D mean on a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

P128D indicates an issue with the Fuel Rail Temperature Sensor 2, specifically that the signal message counter is incorrect, suggesting a communication or sensor malfunction.

2. What are the symptoms of code P128D in a 2015 Chevy Silverado?

Common symptoms include reduced engine performance, poor fuel efficiency, difficulty starting, and potentially an illuminated check engine light.

3. What causes the P128D code to appear?

The code can be caused by a faulty fuel rail temperature sensor, wiring issues such as damaged connectors or wires, or a problem with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

4. Can a faulty fuel rail temperature sensor trigger P128D?

Yes, a malfunctioning fuel rail temperature sensor is one of the primary causes of the P128D code.

5. How do I diagnose the P128D code on my 2015 Silverado?

Start by using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, inspect the wiring and connectors for damage, and test the fuel rail temperature sensor for proper functionality.

6. Is the P128D code serious?

While it may not immediately cause severe damage, ignoring the P128D code can lead to poor engine performance and potentially more significant issues over time.

7. How do I fix the P128D code on a 2015 Chevy Silverado?

Repairs may involve replacing the fuel rail temperature sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, or reprogramming/updating the PCM if necessary.

8. Can a dirty fuel system cause the P128D code?

A dirty fuel system is unlikely to directly cause the P128D code, but it can contribute to related performance issues. Always rule out sensor or wiring problems first.

9. Will clearing the code without repairs fix the issue?

Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the check engine light, but if the underlying problem isn’t resolved, the code will likely return.

10. Should I take my Silverado to a mechanic for the P128D code?
