Code P1282 2004 Nissan Maxima Description

The A/F sensor is a planar dual-cell limit current sensor. The sensor element of the A/F sensor is the combination of a Nernst concentration cell (sensor cell) with an oxygen-pump cell, which transports ions. It has a heater in the element.
The sensor is capable of precise measurement λ= 1, but also in the lean and rich range. Together with its control electronics, the sensor outputs a clear, continuous signal throughout a wide λ range (0.7 < λ < air).
The exhaust gas components diffuse through the diffusion gap at the electrode of the oxygen pump and Nernst concentration cell, where they are brought to thermodynamic balance.
An electronic circuit controls the pump current through the oxygen-pump cell so that the composition of the exhaust gas in the diffusion gap remains constant at λ = 1. Therefore, the A/F sensor is able to indicate air/fuel ratio by this pumping of current. In addition, a heater is integrated in the sensor to ensure the required operating temperature of 700 - 800 C (1,292 - 1,472 F).

Frequently Asked Questions about P1282 2004 Nissan Maxima Code

What does the OBDII code P1282 mean on a 2004 Nissan Maxima?

P1282 indicates that the Air Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 on Bank 2 is not detecting activity or providing the expected response to the engine control module (ECM).

What are the symptoms of the P1282 code in a 2004 Nissan Maxima?

Common symptoms include poor fuel economy, rough idling, reduced engine performance, and the illumination of the check engine light.

What causes the P1282 code on a 2004 Nissan Maxima?

Possible causes include a faulty Air Fuel Ratio Sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a malfunctioning ECM, or exhaust leaks near the sensor.

How do I diagnose the P1282 code on my Nissan Maxima?

Start by inspecting the Air Fuel Ratio Sensor and its wiring for damage or corrosion. Use a scan tool to monitor sensor activity and confirm whether it is functioning within the proper range.

Can a dirty or clogged air filter cause the P1282 code?

While unlikely, a severely clogged air filter can cause air/fuel mixture issues, which may indirectly affect sensor readings. However, it is not a primary cause of this code.

Is it safe to drive with the P1282 code on a 2004 Nissan Maxima?

While the car may still run, driving with this code could lead to poor engine performance, increased emissions, and potential damage to the catalytic converter if not addressed promptly.

How much does it cost to fix the P1282 code on a Nissan Maxima?

Repair costs vary but may include $150–$300 for a replacement Air Fuel Ratio Sensor or additional labor costs if wiring or ECM repairs are required.

Can a faulty ECM trigger the P1282 code?

Yes, a malfunctioning ECM can fail to properly read or interpret the Air Fuel Ratio Sensor’s signals, leading to the P1282 code.

How do I reset the P1282 code after repairs?

Use an OBDII scan tool to clear the code. If the issue is resolved, the code should not return after driving for a few cycles.

What happens if I ignore the P1282 code?

Ignoring this code can result in continued engine performance issues, higher emissions, and potential damage to the catalytic converter over time.
