Code P1278 2005 Nissan Maxima Description

The A/F sensor is a planar dual-cell limit current sensor. The sensor element of the A/F sensor is the combination of a Nernst concentration cell (sensor cell) with an oxygen-pump cell, which transports ions. It has a heater in the element.
The sensor is capable of precise measurement λ= 1, but also in the lean and rich range. Together with its control electronics, the sensor outputs a clear, continuous signal throughout a wide λ range (0.7 < λ < air).
The exhaust gas components diffuse through the diffusion gap at the electrode of the oxygen pump and Nernst concentration cell, where they are brought to thermodynamic balance.
An electronic circuit controls the pump current through the oxygen-pump cell so that the composition of the exhaust gas in the diffusion gap remains constant at λ = 1. Therefore, the A/F sensor is able to indicate air/fuel ratio by this pumping of current. In addition, a heater is integrated in the sensor to ensure the required operating temperature of 700 - 800 C (1,292 - 1,472 F).

Frequently Asked Questions about P1278 2005 Nissan Maxima Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1278 mean on a 2005 Nissan Maxima?

P1278 indicates that the Air Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 (Bank 1) is showing a slow response, meaning it’s not adjusting the air-fuel mixture as quickly as expected.

2. What are the symptoms of code P1278 in a 2005 Nissan Maxima?

Common symptoms include poor fuel economy, rough idling, reduced engine performance, and possibly an illuminated Check Engine Light.

3. What causes the P1278 code to appear?

Possible causes include a faulty air-fuel ratio sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, exhaust leaks, or a malfunctioning engine control module (ECM).

4. Can driving with code P1278 damage my 2005 Nissan Maxima?

Driving for extended periods with this code can lead to poor engine performance, increased emissions, and potential damage to the catalytic converter.

5. How do I diagnose the P1278 code on my Nissan Maxima?

Diagnosis involves using an OBDII scanner, inspecting the air-fuel ratio sensor, checking for wiring issues, and testing for exhaust leaks near the sensor.

6. Is the air-fuel ratio sensor the same as an oxygen sensor?

No, while they are similar, the air-fuel ratio sensor is more advanced and provides more precise feedback about the air-fuel mixture.

7. How do I fix the P1278 code on a 2005 Nissan Maxima?

Repairs may include replacing the air-fuel ratio sensor, repairing damaged wiring, fixing exhaust leaks, or reprogramming the ECM if necessary.

8. How much does it cost to fix the P1278 code?

Repair costs can range from $200 to $500, depending on whether the air-fuel ratio sensor needs replacing or if additional repairs are required.

9. Can a dirty air filter cause the P1278 code?

While unlikely, a clogged air filter can indirectly affect the air-fuel ratio and sensor performance, so it’s worth inspecting and replacing if needed.

10. Do I need to reset the Check Engine Light after fixing code P1278?

Yes, after completing repairs, clear the code with an OBDII scanner and monitor to ensure it does not return.
