AutoCodes – Chevrolet – P122D Chevrolet

P122D Chevrolet Code - Intake Air Flow Valve Position Sensor Exceeded Learning Limit

Quick Answer

The intake airflow valve of diesel engines reduces the intake air flow rate in part-load operation so that a higher exhaust gas recirculation rate can be achieved. Common causes include Faulty Intake Air Flow Valve, Intake Air Flow Valve harness is open or shorted, Intake Air Flow Valve circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P122D Chevrolet Description

The intake airflow valve of diesel engines reduces the intake air flow rate in part-load operation so that a higher exhaust gas recirculation rate can be achieved.
The Intake airflow valve assembly contains a contactless inductive throttle position sensing element that is managed by a customized integrated circuit. The valve position sensor is mounted within the valve body assembly and is not serviceable. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the valve body with a 5 V reference circuit, a low reference circuit, an H-bridge motor directional control circuit, and an asynchronous signal/serial data circuit. The asynchronous signal means communication is only going from the intake airflow valve to the ECM. The Intake Air Flow Valve cannot receive data from the ECM over the signal/serial data circuit. The valve position sensor provides a signal voltage that changes relative to the valve blade angle. The valve position sensor information is transmitted between the Intake Air Flow Valve and the ECM on the signal/serial data circuit.
The valve may also be used to shut down the engine by closing the intake airflow valve and disabling the fuel injectors if the control module detects the engine speed is beyond the desired control limits. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the ECM detects the Intake air flow valve learned closed position is not 4.25 - 4.70 V

Frequently Asked Questions about P122D Chevrolet Code

1. What are the common symptoms of OBDII code P122D in a Chevrolet related to the intake air flow valve position sensor?

Symptoms may include rough idling, decreased engine performance, stalling, and potential illumination of the Check Engine light.

2. What can cause the OBDII code P122D to trigger in a Chevrolet?

Possible causes include a faulty intake air flow valve position sensor, wiring issues, vacuum leaks, or a problem with the intake air flow system.

3. How can I diagnose the issue triggering code P122D in my Chevrolet?

Diagnosis typically involves using a scan tool to read the code, checking the sensor's wiring and connections, inspecting the intake air flow system, and testing the sensor's functionality.

4. Is it safe to continue driving my Chevrolet with the P122D code triggered?

It's recommended to address the issue promptly to prevent potential engine damage or further performance issues. Continuing to drive with the code triggered may lead to worsening symptoms.

5. Can I repair the P122D code issue in my Chevrolet myself?

Depending on your skill level and access to tools, you may be able to address the issue yourself by replacing the intake air flow valve position sensor or repairing any related wiring problems. However, professional help is recommended for accurate diagnosis and repair.

6. Will resetting the Check Engine light resolve the P122D code issue in my Chevrolet?

Simply resetting the Check Engine light will not fix the underlying problem causing the code to trigger. It's important to diagnose and address the root cause of the issue to prevent future occurrences.

7. How much does it typically cost to repair the P122D code issue in a Chevrolet?

Repair costs can vary depending on the exact cause of the problem, labor rates in your area, and whether you choose to address the issue yourself or take it to a mechanic. Costs may include parts and labor expenses.

8. Can a dirty air filter trigger the P122D code in a Chevrolet?

While a dirty air filter can impact engine performance, it is unlikely to directly trigger the P122D code related to the intake air flow valve position sensor. However, ensuring the air filter is clean and properly installed is still important for overall engine health.

9. How long does it typically take to repair the P122D code issue in a Chevrolet?

The repair time can vary based on the specific cause of the problem and the complexity of the repair. Simple fixes like sensor replacement may take less time, while more involved issues could require additional diagnosis and repair steps.
