Code P1198 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The exhaust gas temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. The exhaust temperature sensor 1 is the first exhaust temperature sensor on the exhaust system, the following exhaust temperature sensors are counted upward from the engine outlet to the exhaust system end. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the exhaust gas temperature signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The exhaust gas temperature sensor temperature information is used by the ECM during the exhaust gas particulate filter cleaning process. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the ECM detects that the difference between measured exhaust gas temperature and the estimated exhaust gas temperature is greater than a calibrated amount for greater than 1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1198 2016 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1198 mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

P1198 indicates an issue with the performance of Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 5 while the engine is running, which monitors the temperature of exhaust gases.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P1198 in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include the check engine light turning on, reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, and in some cases, the vehicle entering limp mode.

3. What causes the P1198 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

The common causes include a faulty EGT Sensor 5, damaged wiring or connectors, soot buildup on the sensor, or issues with the ECM (Engine Control Module).

4. Can I drive my 2016 GMC Sierra with the P1198 code?

Driving with the P1198 code is not recommended, as it can lead to further exhaust or engine damage. It’s best to address the issue promptly.

5. How do I fix the P1198 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may involve replacing the faulty EGT sensor, cleaning soot buildup, repairing damaged wiring, or reprogramming/updating the ECM.

6. How can I diagnose the P1198 code in my GMC Sierra?

Use an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, inspect EGT Sensor 5 and its wiring for damage, and test the sensor’s voltage and resistance with a multimeter.

7. How much does it cost to repair the P1198 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

The cost can vary, but replacing an EGT sensor typically ranges from $100 to $300, depending on parts and labor costs.

8. What happens if the P1198 code is ignored?

Ignoring the P1198 code can lead to increased emissions, reduced engine performance, and potential damage to the exhaust system or turbocharger.

9. Can a dirty EGT sensor cause the P1198 code?

Yes, soot or carbon buildup on the EGT sensor can impede its performance and trigger the P1198 code.

10. Does the P1198 code require ECM reprogramming?

In some cases, ECM reprogramming or software updates may be necessary if the issue is related to incorrect sensor readings due to outdated software.
