AutoCodesRAM – P1192 RAM

P1192 RAM Code - Inlet Air Temperature Sensor Circuit Low Condition

Quick Answer

The Inlet Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor is a 2-wire thermistor, as intake air temperature increases, thermistor resistance, and signal voltage decrease. Common causes include Faulty Inlet Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor, Inlet Air Temperature Sensor harness is open or shorted, Inlet Air Temperature Sensor circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P1192 RAM Description

The Inlet Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor is a 2-wire thermistor, as intake air temperature increases, thermistor resistance, and signal voltage decrease. Cold Engine, voltage is sent through a high resistance circuit in Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Warm Engine, voltage is sent through a low resistance circuit in PCM. PCM dual circuit improves IAT accuracy overall temp ranges. PCM monitors IAT voltage to help determine air density, due to temperature, for fuel calculations. The circuit is monitored when the engine is running. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set when Inlet Air Temperature (IAT) sensor voltage is less than 0.5 volts.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1192 RAM Code

What does the OBDII code P1192 mean on a RAM vehicle?

P1192 indicates an "Inlet Air Temperature Sensor Circuit Low Condition," meaning the voltage from the inlet air temperature (IAT) sensor is lower than expected by the engine control module (ECM).

What are common symptoms of a P1192 code on a RAM?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, difficulty starting, and the check engine light illuminating.

What causes the P1192 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty inlet air temperature sensor, damaged or corroded wiring, a poor electrical connection, or a malfunctioning ECM.

Can a dirty air filter cause the P1192 code?

No, a dirty air filter is unlikely to cause this code. The issue is typically electrical or sensor-related, not airflow-related.

How do I diagnose the P1192 code?

Start by inspecting the IAT sensor and its wiring for damage or corrosion. Use a multimeter to check sensor resistance and wiring continuity. If these check out, test the ECM.

Can I drive with a P1192 code?

While driving with a P1192 code is possible, it’s not recommended, as it can lead to poor engine performance and potential long-term damage.

How do you fix the P1192 code on a RAM vehicle?

Repairs may involve replacing the IAT sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, or, in rare cases, replacing the ECM.

What tools are needed to troubleshoot a P1192 code?

You will need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter, and possibly a repair manual for your specific RAM model to locate components and wiring diagrams.

How much does it cost to fix a P1192 code?

Repair costs can range from $50 to $200, depending on whether the issue is a simple sensor replacement or involves wiring repairs.

Can extreme weather cause a P1192 code?

Yes, extreme cold or heat can sometimes affect sensor performance or wiring, potentially triggering this code.
