Code P118E 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The exhaust gas temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. The exhaust temperature sensor 1 is the first exhaust temperature sensor on the exhaust system, the following exhaust temperature sensors are counted upward from the engine outlet to the exhaust system end. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the exhaust gas temperature signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The exhaust gas temperature sensor temperature information is used by the ECM during the exhaust gas particulate filter cleaning process. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the ECM detects that the difference between measured exhaust gas temperature and the estimated exhaust gas temperature is greater than a calibrated amount for greater than 1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P118E 2016 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P118E mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

P118E indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 1, specifically a performance problem while the engine is running.

What are the symptoms of code P118E on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include the check engine light being illuminated, reduced fuel efficiency, potential soot buildup, and possible limp mode activation.

What causes the P118E code to appear on a GMC Sierra?

Possible causes include a faulty EGT sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, excessive soot buildup on the sensor, or an issue with the engine control module (ECM).

Can I drive with the P118E code active on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

It is not recommended to drive with this code active as it may lead to reduced engine performance or damage to the exhaust aftertreatment system.

How do I diagnose the P118E code on a GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis typically involves using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, inspecting the EGT sensor and its wiring for damage, and checking for soot buildup or other exhaust system issues.

How can I fix the P118E code on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty EGT sensor, cleaning or repairing damaged wiring, clearing soot buildup, or updating the ECM software if necessary.

How much does it cost to repair the P118E code on a GMC Sierra?

The cost varies depending on the repair needed. Replacing the EGT sensor typically costs between $150 and $300, including parts and labor.

What role does the EGT sensor play in my GMC Sierra?

The EGT sensor monitors the temperature of exhaust gases to ensure proper operation of the exhaust aftertreatment system and to prevent overheating.

Can a faulty EGT sensor cause engine damage in a GMC Sierra?

Yes, if the sensor is not functioning correctly, it can lead to overheating or damage to the exhaust aftertreatment components, such as the catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter.

What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P118E code?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for testing wiring and sensor output, and potentially basic hand tools to access and inspect the sensor.
