Code P118E 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The exhaust gas temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. The exhaust temperature sensor 1 is the first exhaust temperature sensor on the exhaust system, the following exhaust temperature sensors are counted upward from the engine outlet to the exhaust system end. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the exhaust gas temperature signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The exhaust gas temperature sensor temperature information is used by the ECM during the exhaust gas particulate filter cleaning process. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the ECM detects that the difference between measured exhaust gas temperature and the estimated exhaust gas temperature is greater than a calibrated amount for greater than 1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P118E 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Code

What does the OBDII code P118E mean on a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado?

P118E indicates an issue with Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 1's performance while the engine is running. This sensor monitors exhaust temperatures to ensure proper emissions control and engine performance.

What are the common symptoms of code P118E?

Common symptoms include the check engine light turning on, reduced engine performance, poor fuel efficiency, and, in some cases, the engine entering limp mode.

What causes the P118E code to appear?

The code can be triggered by a faulty EGT sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, excessive soot buildup on the sensor, or issues with the engine control module (ECM).

How do I diagnose the P118E code?

Diagnosis involves inspecting the EGT sensor and its wiring for damage, checking for soot buildup, testing the sensor's resistance with a multimeter, and scanning for additional codes that may indicate related issues.

Can I drive my 2014 Chevrolet Silverado with a P118E code?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it may impact engine performance, increase emissions, and potentially cause further damage to exhaust or engine components.

How do I fix the P118E code?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty EGT sensor, cleaning soot buildup, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or, in rare cases, reprogramming or replacing the ECM.

How much does it cost to fix the P118E code?

The repair cost varies but typically ranges from $150 to $300 for parts and labor, depending on whether the EGT sensor or wiring requires replacement.

Does the P118E code affect fuel efficiency?

Yes, a malfunctioning EGT sensor can lead to incorrect fuel-air mixture adjustments, potentially reducing fuel efficiency.

Can a bad EGT sensor damage my engine?

If left unresolved, a faulty EGT sensor can cause overheating or incorrect emissions system operation, potentially leading to engine or exhaust damage.

How can I prevent the P118E code from recurring?

Regular maintenance, including cleaning the exhaust system and inspecting sensors and wiring, can help prevent this code from recurring.
