Code P1166 2005 Nissan Maxima Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S) (Rear O2 Sensor), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. For optimum catalyst operation, the air fuel mixture (air-fuel ratio) must be maintained near the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The HO2S output voltage changes suddenly in the vicinity of the stoichiometric ratio. The Engine Control Module (ECM) adjusts the fuel injection time so that the air-fuel ratio is nearly stoichiometric. The HO2S generates a voltage between 0.1 and 0.9 V in response to oxygen in the exhaust gas. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas increases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Lean. The ECM interprets Lean when the HO2S voltage is below 0.45 V. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas decreases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Rich. The ECM interprets Rich when the HO2S voltage is above 0.45 V.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1166 2005 Nissan Maxima Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1166 mean for a 2005 Nissan Maxima?

P1166 indicates a problem with the Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 on Bank 2, specifically a failure to detect the minimum voltage level during monitoring.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P1166 in a Nissan Maxima?

Symptoms may include reduced fuel efficiency, rough idling, poor engine performance, and the check engine light being illuminated.

3. What causes the P1166 code to appear in a 2005 Nissan Maxima?

Common causes include a faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (Bank 2), damaged wiring or connectors, exhaust leaks, or an issue with the engine control module (ECM).

4. Which sensor does P1166 refer to on a 2005 Nissan Maxima?

P1166 refers to the downstream oxygen sensor (Sensor 2) on Bank 2, which monitors the catalytic converter's efficiency.

5. How can I diagnose the P1166 code in my 2005 Nissan Maxima?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, then test the Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 for proper operation and voltage output using a multimeter or scan tool.

6. Can I drive my 2005 Nissan Maxima with a P1166 code?

While the car may still be drivable, driving with a P1166 code can lead to decreased fuel efficiency and potential damage to the catalytic converter if left unresolved.

7. How do I fix the P1166 code on my Nissan Maxima?

Repairs may include replacing the Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (Bank 2), repairing damaged wiring or connectors, addressing exhaust leaks, or reprogramming/diagnosing the ECM.

8. How much does it cost to fix a P1166 code on a 2005 Nissan Maxima?

Replacing a Heated Oxygen Sensor typically costs between $150 and $300, including parts and labor. Costs may vary depending on additional repairs needed.

9. What tools are needed to repair a P1166 code on a 2005 Nissan Maxima?

You'll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for testing sensor voltage, and potentially a socket set or oxygen sensor removal tool.

10. Can a faulty catalytic converter cause the P1166 code?

Yes, a failing catalytic converter can affect downstream oxygen sensor readings and trigger the P1166 code. It should be inspected if other repairs don’t resolve the issue.
