P1157 2001 Ford F150 Code - Lack Of Heated Oxygen Sensor Switches Bank 2 Sensor 2 Indicates Lean

Quick Answer

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S2) (Downstream), after the three-way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. Common causes include Exhaust gas leaks, Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S2) (Downstream) Bank 2, Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Bank 2 harness is open or shorted. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P1157 2001 Ford F150 Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S2) (Downstream), after the three-way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. For optimum catalyst operation, the air-fuel mixture (air-fuel ratio) must maintain near the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The HO2S2 output voltage changes suddenly in the vicinity of the stoichiometric ratio. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) adjusts the fuel injection time so that the air-fuel ratio is nearly stoichiometric. The HO2S2 generates a voltage between 0.1 and 0.9 V in response to oxygen in the exhaust gas. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas increases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Lean. The PCM interprets Lean when the HO2S2 voltage is below 0.45 V. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas decreases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Rich. The PCM interprets Rich when the HO2S2 voltage is above 0.45 V. The P1157 code will set when the PCM detects that the HO2S2 signal is below the voltage of range for an extended period.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1157 2001 Ford F150 Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1157 mean for a 2001 Ford F150?

The P1157 code indicates that the downstream heated oxygen sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 2) is not switching properly and is detecting a lean condition.

2. What are the common symptoms of a P1157 code on a 2001 Ford F150?

Symptoms may include a check engine light, reduced fuel efficiency, rough idling, poor acceleration, and increased exhaust emissions.

3. What causes the P1157 code on a 2001 Ford F150?

Common causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, exhaust leaks near the sensor, a vacuum leak, fuel delivery issues, or wiring/connectivity problems.

4. How can I diagnose the P1157 code in my Ford F150?

Start by inspecting the Bank 2 Sensor 2 wiring and connections for damage, checking for exhaust or vacuum leaks, and testing the oxygen sensor's voltage and response.

5. Can a dirty air filter cause the P1157 code?

A dirty air filter is unlikely to directly cause the P1157 code but can contribute to a lean condition if it restricts airflow significantly.

6. Should I replace the oxygen sensor if I get a P1157 code?

Replacing the oxygen sensor may fix the issue, but it’s important to inspect related components, such as wiring and vacuum lines, before replacing parts.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P1157 code on a 2001 Ford F150?

Repair costs can vary but typically range from $100 to $300 for parts and labor if the oxygen sensor is the issue. Additional repairs may increase the cost.

8. Can I drive my Ford F150 with a P1157 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, driving with a P1157 code for an extended period can lead to reduced performance, higher emissions, and potential damage to the catalytic converter.

9. How do I prevent the P1157 code from recurring?

Regular maintenance, such as checking for vacuum leaks, ensuring proper fuel delivery, and replacing oxygen sensors as needed, can help prevent the P1157 code.

10. Is P1157 specific to the 2001 Ford F150?

No, the P1157 code can appear on other vehicles, but its meaning and specific diagnostics may vary. For the 2001 Ford F150, it specifically refers to Bank 2 Sensor 2 detecting a lean condition.
