This system uses an electric pump to supply hot coolant stored in the Coolant Heat Storage (CHS) tank into the cylinder head of the engine, in order to optimize engine starting combustion and reduce the amount of unburned gas that is discharged while the engine is started. Before the engine starts, the Engine Control Module (ECM) operates the electric water pump to direct the hot coolant in the CHS tank into the engine, in order to heat the cylinder head (this process is called "preheat mode"). The duration of the operation of the electric water pump is variable, depending on the temperature of the cylinder head. During normal operation of the engine, the water valve opens the passage between the cylinder head and the heater and closes the passage between the cylinder head and the tank. During the preheat mode in which the cylinder head is heated, the water valve opens the passage between the tank and the cylinder head, in order to allow the coolant to flow from the tank to the cylinder head. At this time, in order to warm up the intake port quickly before the engine is started, the coolant flows in the reverse direction.

  • hello, thanks for being on the web! i have been needing information on this! 4 months ago i had a code to replace the coolent temp valve. no problem, dealer did it. one month ago code came on for the coolent temp sensor, they had informed me that would be best if i had the heat tank and three way valve also replaced-all this for about 2500$! i said no thanks and just the sensor replaced. two weeks after had the same code on again. took it back to dealer and reqeisted for them to check the temp sensor make sure it works and clear my code. they are covering them selfs with, " now the probable cause is the heat tank and three way valve." my question is, why is the tank not sending its own code? the code now is p1116 the same for the sensor i replaced a month ago. they said that the only way theyll give me a guaranty is if i have the heat tank and three way valve replaced...for 2400!
    the tech mentioned that the tank could have debris in it and blocking water flow.
    would i damage my engine if i drive it like this? 2009 prius, 205000mil.

  • thank you for your insite, im going to go ahead and take it to the dealer for the replacment of the heat storage tank and the three way valve...for a whopping 24000. hopefully that keeps the code from returning.
