Code P1147 2004 Nissan Maxima Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S) (Rear O2 Sensor), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. For optimum catalyst operation, the air fuel mixture (air-fuel ratio) must be maintained near the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The HO2S output voltage changes suddenly in the vicinity of the stoichiometric ratio. The Engine Control Module (ECM) adjusts the fuel injection time so that the air-fuel ratio is nearly stoichiometric. The HO2S generates a voltage between 0.1 and 0.9 V in response to oxygen in the exhaust gas. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas increases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Lean. The ECM interprets Lean when the HO2S voltage is below 0.45 V. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas decreases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Rich. The ECM interprets Rich when the HO2S voltage is above 0.45 V.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1147 2004 Nissan Maxima Code

1. What does the P1147 code mean on a 2004 Nissan Maxima?

P1147 indicates that the Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (Bank 1) is detecting a voltage higher than the maximum threshold, suggesting a potential issue with the sensor or related systems.

2. What are the symptoms of a P1147 code?

Common symptoms include poor fuel efficiency, rough idling, decreased engine performance, and the illumination of the Check Engine Light.

3. What causes the P1147 code to appear?

Possible causes include a faulty downstream oxygen sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 2), damaged wiring or connectors, an exhaust leak, or issues with the engine control module (ECM).

4. How do I diagnose the P1147 code on my Nissan Maxima?

Start by checking the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion near the oxygen sensor. Use a scan tool to monitor sensor voltages and confirm if the sensor is functioning within normal ranges.

5. Can I drive my 2004 Nissan Maxima with a P1147 code?

While the car may still be drivable, it’s not recommended as it can lead to reduced fuel economy, increased emissions, and potential long-term engine damage if unresolved.

6. How do I fix the P1147 code on my Nissan Maxima?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty oxygen sensor, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, fixing exhaust leaks, or reprogramming the ECM if necessary.

7. Which oxygen sensor is affected by the P1147 code on a 2004 Nissan Maxima?

The P1147 code specifically refers to the downstream oxygen sensor (Sensor 2) on Bank 1, which is on the side of the engine with cylinder 1.

8. How much does it cost to repair a P1147 code?

Replacing a downstream oxygen sensor typically costs between $150 and $300, including parts and labor. Additional repairs like fixing wiring or exhaust leaks can raise costs.

9. Can a dirty air filter cause the P1147 code?

A dirty air filter is unlikely to directly cause this code but could contribute to overall poor air-fuel mixture and efficiency, which may exacerbate sensor issues.

10. Do I need to clear the code after repairs?

Yes, after completing repairs, use an OBD-II scanner to clear the code and test drive the car to ensure the problem is resolved.
