P1147 2003 Nissan Altima Sedan Code - Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Maximum Voltage Monitoring Bank 1

Quick Answer

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S) (Rear O2 Sensor), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. Common causes include Faulty heated oxygen (O2) sensor 2 (rear), Intake air leaks, Heated oxygen (O2) sensor 2 (rear) harness is open or shorted. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P1147 2003 Nissan Altima Sedan Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S) (Rear O2 Sensor), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. For optimum catalyst operation, the air fuel mixture (air-fuel ratio) must be maintained near the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The HO2S output voltage changes suddenly in the vicinity of the stoichiometric ratio. The Engine Control Module (ECM) adjusts the fuel injection time so that the air-fuel ratio is nearly stoichiometric. The HO2S generates a voltage between 0.1 and 0.9 V in response to oxygen in the exhaust gas. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas increases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Lean. The ECM interprets Lean when the HO2S voltage is below 0.45 V. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas decreases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Rich. The ECM interprets Rich when the HO2S voltage is above 0.45 V.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1147 2003 Nissan Altima Sedan Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1147 mean on a 2003 Nissan Altima?

P1147 indicates that the Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (Bank 1) has detected a voltage reading above the maximum threshold, which may affect the air-fuel mixture.

2. What are the symptoms of code P1147 in a 2003 Nissan Altima?

Symptoms may include poor fuel economy, rough idling, engine hesitation, a check engine light, and potential difficulty passing emissions tests.

3. What causes the P1147 code to appear on a 2003 Nissan Altima?

Common causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, an exhaust leak upstream of the sensor, or an engine running excessively lean or rich.

4. Which sensor does P1147 refer to in a 2003 Nissan Altima?

P1147 refers to the downstream Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 on Bank 1, which monitors the efficiency of the catalytic converter.

5. Can I drive my 2003 Nissan Altima with a P1147 code?

While the car may be drivable, it is not recommended as it can lead to reduced fuel efficiency, potential engine damage, and failure to meet emissions standards.

6. How do I diagnose the P1147 code in a 2003 Nissan Altima?

Diagnosis involves using a scan tool to check live oxygen sensor data, inspecting the sensor and its wiring for damage, and checking for exhaust leaks or issues with the catalytic converter.

7. How is the P1147 code repaired in a 2003 Nissan Altima?

Repairs may include replacing the oxygen sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, sealing any exhaust leaks, or addressing engine performance issues affecting the air-fuel mixture.

8. How much does it cost to fix the P1147 code on a 2003 Nissan Altima?

Replacing the oxygen sensor typically costs $100–$300, including labor, but costs may vary depending on the exact cause of the issue.

9. Can a dirty air filter cause the P1147 code in a 2003 Nissan Altima?

While unlikely, a severely clogged air filter could contribute to an improper air-fuel mixture, indirectly affecting oxygen sensor readings.

10. Will clearing the code P1147 fix the issue in a 2003 Nissan Altima?

Clearing the code will remove the check engine light temporarily, but if the underlying issue is not resolved, the code will likely reappear.
