P1121 2009 Toyota Prius Code - Coolant Flow Control Valve Position Sensor Circuit Stuck
Quick Answer
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the position of the water valve based on the valve position signal that is output by the water valve position sensor (potentiometer), which is coupled coaxially to the valve. Common causes include Coolant Flow Control Valve (Stuck or Clogged Cooling System), Faulty Coolant Flow Control Valve Position Sensor, Coolant Flow Control Valve Position Sensor harness is open or shorted. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

I have a 2009 prius ...warning light comes on and goes off intermittently...had it checked and was told that codes P1116 and P1121 came up. Was told by Toyota the fix would be $370 ..they would replace coolant/heater control valve.
Is it harmful to drive or what is risk of not fixing this?
Are there any other options that are less costly?
Thanks
Andy -
If you keep driving without doing the repair, the valve could get completely stuck and overheat the engine. Unfortunately there are no other options, it's the factory that is recommending that repair.

I got a p1121 on the 05 prius and I was wondering is it a coolant control valve or the pedal sensor? how do I tell which to go for. I hear the coolant control valve is up to 500 buck to replace.
thanks
the code reader that gave me the p1121 said below it "accelerator pedal position sensor range/performance problem -
The P1121 is for the Coolant Flow Control Valve, we have just updated the "Tech Notes" above with a video on how to replace the valve.

Hi, I have a 2005 prius ...(check engine light) comes on and goes off

I have a 2008 Prius. The engine light was going on and off. The tech at the dealership replaced the computer to the engine because he was getting the code P1121 and didn't think that the code matched the problem. He couldn't identify the issue based on the code. $1,000 later light shut off for two hours after it came out of shop but now check engine light is on again. Before they replaced the computer the coolant was a little low but they couldn't figure out why. Should the computer have been replaced? Can this be the coolant control valve? I need some advice because even though it is a Toyota dealership I am not sure if the tech is heading in the right direction.
