Code P1117 2012 Ford Fusion Description

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor is a thermistor device in which resistance changes with temperature. The electrical resistance of a thermistor decreases as the temperature increases, and the resistance increases as the temperature decreases. The varying resistance changes the voltage drop across the sensor terminals and provides electrical signals to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) corresponding to temperature.
Thermistor-type sensors are considered passive sensors. A passive sensor is connected to a voltage divider network so varying the resistance of the passive sensor causes a variation in total current flow. Voltage that is dropped across a fixed resistor (pull-up resister) in series with the sensor resistor determines the voltage signal at the PCM. This voltage signal is equal to the reference voltage minus the voltage drop across the fixed resistor.
The ECT measures the temperature of the engine coolant. The PCM uses the ECT input for fuel control and for cooling fan control. There are 3 types of ECT sensors; threaded, push-in, and twist-lock. The ECT sensor is located in an engine coolant passage.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1117 2012 Ford Fusion Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1117 mean on a 2012 Ford Fusion?

The P1117 code indicates an intermittent issue with the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, which monitors the temperature of the engine's coolant.

2. What are the symptoms of a P1117 code on a 2012 Ford Fusion?

Common symptoms include poor engine performance, difficulty starting, erratic temperature gauge readings, decreased fuel efficiency, and potential overheating.

3. What causes a P1117 code to appear on a 2012 Ford Fusion?

Causes may include a faulty ECT sensor, corroded or loose wiring, a damaged sensor connector, or an issue with the engine control module (ECM).

4. Can I drive my 2012 Ford Fusion with a P1117 code?

While the car may still run, driving with a P1117 code is not recommended as it can lead to engine overheating or inefficient fuel consumption.

5. How do I diagnose a P1117 code on my 2012 Ford Fusion?

Start by inspecting the ECT sensor and its wiring for damage or corrosion. Use an OBDII scanner to monitor the sensor's data and ensure it’s functioning properly.

6. How do I fix the P1117 code on my 2012 Ford Fusion?

Repairs may include replacing the ECT sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, or reprogramming the ECM if necessary.

7. Where is the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor located on a 2012 Ford Fusion?

The ECT sensor is typically located near the thermostat housing, which is connected to the engine block.

8. How much does it cost to repair a P1117 code on a 2012 Ford Fusion?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $50 to $200 for parts and labor, depending on whether the ECT sensor, wiring, or connectors need replacement.

9. Will clearing the P1117 code fix the problem on my 2012 Ford Fusion?

Clearing the code may temporarily reset the check engine light, but it won’t fix the underlying issue causing the P1117 code.

10. Can a bad thermostat cause a P1117 code on a 2012 Ford Fusion?

A malfunctioning thermostat can indirectly cause issues with the ECT sensor, leading to a P1117 code, as it affects the coolant's temperature regulation.
