Code P1064 Chrysler Description

Multi-Air is an electronically controlled variable intake valve phase and lift system. Unlike conventional intake valve phase and lift system which controls all the cylinder intake valves simultaneously and in the same proportion; Multi-Air, through the use of an electronically controlled hydraulic link between the camshaft and intake valve, allows for each intake valve to be controlled independently. The valve lift and timing can be adjusted infinitely.
The Multi-Air valve train has a mechanical camshaft lobe acting on a hydraulic pump located between the camshaft intake lobe and the intake valve. The pump provides oil under pressure to a two-way electro-hydraulic solenoid valve called the Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) Solenoid. The VVA Solenoid is electronically controlled during the specific intake cam lobe event by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). During the event, the VVA Solenoid is commanded to either hold oil pressure or bleed oil. The Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) Solenoid is a normally open solenoid. The PCM provides 12 volts to close the solenoid. The position of the VVA Solenoid determines the intake valve timing and lift. This change on valve action is similar to creating a change in the camshaft lobe profile affecting the lift and duration of the valve opening. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the PCM monitors the feedback current and determines that the Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) Solenoid is stuck.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1064 Chrysler Code

What does the OBDII code P1064 mean in a Chrysler vehicle?

Code P1064 indicates that the Cylinder 4 Oil Supply Solenoid Valve is stuck, which can cause issues with variable valve timing or cylinder management.

What are common symptoms of the P1064 code in a Chrysler?

Symptoms may include reduced engine performance, rough idling, misfires, poor fuel economy, and an illuminated check engine light.

What causes the Cylinder 4 Oil Supply Solenoid Valve to become stuck?

Causes can include oil contamination, sludge buildup, mechanical failure of the solenoid, or electrical issues like a damaged wiring harness or connector.

Can a dirty engine oil cause the P1064 code?

Yes, dirty or degraded oil can lead to sludge buildup, which can obstruct the solenoid valve and trigger this code.

How do you diagnose the P1064 code in a Chrysler?

Diagnosis typically involves using an OBDII scanner, inspecting the solenoid valve and wiring, checking oil quality, and verifying proper oil pressure.

Is it safe to drive with the P1064 code active?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it can lead to engine damage or decreased performance if the issue worsens.

How can the P1064 code be fixed?

Repairs may include replacing the oil supply solenoid valve, cleaning the valve, addressing wiring or electrical faults, or performing an oil change if contamination is an issue.

What tools are needed to fix a P1064 code?

Common tools include an OBDII scanner, basic hand tools for solenoid removal, and potentially a multimeter to test electrical connections.

Does the P1064 code always require a solenoid replacement?

No, sometimes cleaning the solenoid or addressing wiring issues can resolve the problem without replacing the part.

Can regular oil changes help prevent the P1064 code?

Yes, maintaining clean engine oil can minimize the risk of sludge buildup and keep the oil supply solenoid functioning properly.
