Code P104C Dodge Description

Multi-Air is an electronically controlled variable intake valve phase and lift system. Unlike conventional intake valve phase and lift system which controls all the cylinder intake valves simultaneously and in the same proportion; Multi-Air, through the use of an electronically controlled hydraulic link between the camshaft and intake valve, allows for each intake valve to be controlled independently. The valve lift and timing can be adjusted infinitely.
The Multi-Air valve train has a mechanical camshaft lobe acting on a hydraulic pump located between the camshaft intake lobe and the intake valve. The pump provides oil under pressure to a two-way electro-hydraulic solenoid valve called the Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) Solenoid. The VVA Solenoid is electronically controlled during the specific intake cam lobe event by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). During the event, the VVA Solenoid is commanded to either hold oil pressure or bleed oil. The Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) Solenoid is a normally open solenoid. The PCM provides 12 volts to close the solenoid. The position of the VVA Solenoid determines the intake valve timing and lift. This change on valve action is similar to creating a change in the camshaft lobe profile affecting the lift and duration of the valve opening. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) solenoid current feedback level in voltage is out of range.

Frequently Asked Questions about P104C Dodge Code

What does the OBDII code P104C mean for a Dodge vehicle?

P104C indicates an overcurrent condition in the Cylinder 4 Oil Supply Solenoid Valve, which controls oil flow to the variable valve timing system for cylinder 4.

What are the common symptoms of code P104C on a Dodge?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, rough idling, decreased fuel efficiency, and the check engine light turning on.

What causes the P104C code to appear in a Dodge?

Common causes include a faulty oil supply solenoid valve, wiring issues such as shorts or corrosion, or problems with the engine control module (ECM).

Can a dirty or low oil level cause the P104C code?

Yes, insufficient or dirty oil can affect the solenoid valve’s operation, potentially leading to the P104C overcurrent issue.

How do you diagnose the P104C code in a Dodge?

Diagnosis typically involves checking the wiring and connections to the solenoid valve, inspecting the valve for damage, and verifying proper oil levels and condition.

Can you drive a Dodge with the P104C code active?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it may lead to engine performance issues and potential damage to the variable valve timing system.

How do you fix the P104C code in a Dodge?

Repairs may include replacing the Cylinder 4 Oil Supply Solenoid Valve, repairing damaged wiring, or addressing oil level and quality issues.

Does the P104C code require a solenoid replacement in all cases?

Not necessarily; the issue might be related to wiring problems, oil contamination, or ECM faults instead of the solenoid itself.

How much does it typically cost to fix the P104C code?

Repair costs vary depending on the issue but can range from $100 to $500, depending on whether the solenoid, wiring, or other components need replacement.

Can the P104C code cause long-term engine damage if ignored?

Yes, ignoring this code may lead to variable valve timing issues and increased wear on engine components over time.
