Code P0970 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The pressure control solenoid 3 is part of the control solenoid valve assembly which has no serviceable parts. The normally high-pressure control solenoid 3 regulates and directs the pressure control solenoid 3 oil pressure to the 4-5-6 clutch regulator valve and 4-5-6 clutch boost valve. Increasing pressure control solenoid 3 oil pressure increases oil pressure to the 4-5-6 clutch assembly. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) varies the current to the pressure control solenoid 3 through a low side driver. Decreasing the current to the pressure control solenoid 3 increases pressure control solenoid 3 oil pressure by closing OFF the solenoid exhaust port. Increasing the current to the pressure control solenoid 3 decreases pressure control solenoid 3 oil pressure by opening the solenoid exhaust port. Pressure control solenoid 3 power is supplied by the Transmission Control Module through a high side driver. The high-side driver protects the circuit and components from excessive current flow. If excessive current flow is detected, the high side driver will turn OFF. When the fault is corrected the high-side driver will reset.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Transmission Control Module detects a short to ground on the pressure control solenoid 3 control circuit for 1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0970 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0970 mean on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0970 indicates a low voltage issue in the control circuit of Pressure Control Solenoid Valve 3, which manages hydraulic pressure in the transmission.

2. What are the symptoms of code P0970 on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common symptoms include erratic or harsh shifting, transmission slipping, poor fuel economy, and the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P0970 code to appear on my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Potential causes include a faulty pressure control solenoid, damaged wiring or connectors in the circuit, a failed transmission control module (TCM), or low transmission fluid.

4. Can low transmission fluid cause the P0970 code?

Yes, low or contaminated transmission fluid can lead to improper solenoid operation, potentially triggering the P0970 code.

5. How do I diagnose the P0970 code on my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Diagnosis typically involves checking the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, testing the solenoid for proper function, and verifying adequate transmission fluid levels.

6. Can I drive my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado with the P0970 code?

Driving with the P0970 code is not recommended, as it can lead to further transmission damage or unsafe driving conditions due to shifting issues.

7. How much does it cost to repair the P0970 code on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs vary but may range from $150 to $400 for solenoid replacement, with additional costs if wiring or the TCM needs repair.
