Code P0964 GMC Description

The pressure control solenoid 2 is part of the control solenoid valve assembly which has no serviceable parts. The normally high-pressure control solenoid 2 regulates and directs the pressure control solenoid 2 oil pressure to the 3-5 reverse clutch regulator valve and 3-5 reverse clutch boost valve. Increasing pressure control solenoid 2 pressure increases pressure to the 3-5 reverse clutch. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) varies the current to the pressure control solenoid 2 through a low side driver. Decreasing the current to the pressure control solenoid 2 increases pressure control solenoid 2 oil pressure by closing OFF the solenoid exhaust port. Increasing the current to the pressure control solenoid 2 decreases pressure control solenoid 2 oil pressure by opening the solenoid exhaust port. Pressure control solenoid 2 power is supplied by the Transmission Control Module through a high side driver. The high-side driver protects the circuit and components from excessive current flow. If excessive current flow is detected, the high side driver will turn OFF. When the fault is corrected, the high-side driver will reset.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Transmission Control Module detects an open on the pressure control solenoid valve 2 control circuit for 1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0964 GMC Code

1. What does the OBD-II code P0964 mean on a GMC vehicle?

The P0964 code indicates an open circuit condition in the Pressure Control Solenoid Valve 2, which manages hydraulic pressure in the transmission.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P0964 code?

Symptoms may include harsh or erratic shifting, transmission slipping, reduced fuel efficiency, and illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P0964 code to appear on a GMC vehicle?

Common causes include faulty pressure control solenoid valve, damaged wiring or connectors, transmission fluid contamination, or issues with the transmission control module (TCM).

4. Can a P0964 code cause further damage if ignored?

Yes, ignoring this code can lead to severe transmission damage, reduced drivability, and costly repairs over time.

5. How do you diagnose a P0964 code on a GMC vehicle?

Diagnosis typically involves checking the solenoid valve and its wiring for damage, inspecting transmission fluid condition, and testing the TCM for proper operation.

6. Is it safe to drive a GMC vehicle with a P0964 code?

Driving with a P0964 code is not recommended, as it can impact shifting performance and lead to transmission damage.

7. How can the P0964 code be fixed on a GMC vehicle?

Repairs may include replacing the pressure control solenoid valve, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, flushing and replacing transmission fluid, or updating/replacing the TCM.

8. What tools are needed to diagnose and fix the P0964 code?

You’ll need an OBD-II scanner, multimeter, basic hand tools, and potentially a transmission fluid flush kit.

9. How much does it cost to repair the P0964 code on a GMC vehicle?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $150 to $600, depending on whether the solenoid or wiring needs replacement or if the issue is with the TCM.

10. Can low transmission fluid cause the P0964 code?

Yes, low or contaminated transmission fluid can contribute to pressure control solenoid issues and trigger the P0964 code.
