Code P0961 GMC Description

The line pressure control solenoid is part of the control solenoid valve assembly which has no serviceable parts. The normally high line pressure control solenoid regulates and directs the pressure control solenoid oil pressure to the isolator/pressure regulator valve. Increasing pressure control solenoid line pressure increases transmission line pressure. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) varies the current to the line pressure control solenoid through a low side driver. Decreasing the current to the line pressure control solenoid increases line pressure control solenoid oil pressure by closing OFF the solenoid exhaust port. Increasing the current to the line pressure control solenoid decreases line pressure control oil pressure by opening the solenoid exhaust port. Line pressure control solenoid power is supplied by the Transmission Control Module through a high-side driver. The high-side driver protects the circuit and components from excessive current flow. If the excessive current flow is detected, the high side driver will turn OFF. When the fault is corrected the high-side driver will reset.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Transmission Control Module detects an internal electrical malfunction of the line pressure control solenoid where the measured line pressure control solenoid current does not equal the commanded line pressure control solenoid current for 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0961 GMC Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0961 mean on a GMC?

P0961 indicates a performance issue with the Line Pressure Control Solenoid Valve, which regulates hydraulic pressure in the transmission.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P0961 code in a GMC vehicle?

Symptoms may include harsh shifting, transmission slippage, inability to shift gears, and the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P0961 code in GMC vehicles?

Common causes include a faulty line pressure control solenoid, damaged wiring or connectors, low transmission fluid, or a malfunctioning transmission control module (TCM).

4. Can low transmission fluid trigger the P0961 code?

Yes, low or contaminated transmission fluid can cause improper pressure regulation, leading to the P0961 code.

5. How is the P0961 code diagnosed in a GMC?

A technician will typically check the transmission fluid level, inspect the solenoid and wiring, and use a scan tool to monitor transmission pressure and solenoid operation.

6. Can I drive my GMC with the P0961 code?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it can lead to further transmission damage or unsafe driving conditions.

7. How much does it cost to repair the P0961 code on a GMC?

Repair costs vary depending on the cause but typically range from $200 to $500 for solenoid replacement, plus diagnostic fees.

8. Can a dirty transmission filter cause the P0961 code in a GMC?

Yes, a clogged transmission filter can restrict fluid flow and affect line pressure, potentially triggering the P0961 code.

9. Will resetting the check engine light fix the P0961 code?

Resetting the light without addressing the underlying issue will not fix the problem, and the code is likely to return.

10. How can I prevent the P0961 code from occurring in my GMC?

Regular maintenance, including checking and replacing transmission fluid and filters, can help prevent solenoid and transmission issues that trigger this code.
