Code P0873 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The transmission fluid pressure switch, also known as the pressure switch manifold, is a multiple switch assembly made up of 3 normally open pressure switches and 1 normally closed pressure switch. Pressure switch 1 monitors shift valve 1 positioning, pressure switch 2 monitors shift valve 2 positioning, pressure switch 3 monitors shift valve 3 positioning, and pressure switch 4 monitors the position of the manual selector valve. The TCM provides a signal circuit to each of the pressure switches. The TCM constantly monitors the circuits to determine the position of the shift valves. The position of shift valves 1, 2, and 3 is controlled by 3 normally closed shift solenoids. When energized, shift solenoid 1 directs fluid pressure to shift valve 1, shift solenoid 2 directs fluid pressure to shift valve 2, and shift solenoid 3 directs fluid pressure to shift valve 3, which strokes the shift valves. When a shift valve is stroked, an exhaust passage is blocked and fluid pressure increases, closing the normally open pressure switch. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects that transmission fluid pressure switch 3 signal circuit is High when shift solenoid 3 is commanded ON for 1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0873 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

What does the OBDII code P0873 mean on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

The P0873 code indicates a high voltage issue in the Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch 3 Circuit, which monitors hydraulic pressure in the transmission.

What are the common symptoms of code P0873 in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms may include harsh or delayed shifting, transmission slippage, reduced fuel efficiency, or the transmission entering limp mode.

What causes the P0873 code in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty transmission fluid pressure switch, damaged wiring or connectors in the circuit, low transmission fluid levels, or a failing transmission control module (TCM).

Can driving with the P0873 code damage my Silverado?

Yes, driving with this code for an extended period can cause further damage to the transmission, especially if the vehicle is stuck in limp mode or experiencing shifting issues.

How do I diagnose the P0873 code on my Silverado?

Diagnosis involves checking the transmission fluid level and condition, inspecting wiring and connectors for damage, testing the pressure switch, and using a scan tool to monitor live data and voltage readings.

How can I fix the P0873 code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty pressure switch, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, topping off or replacing the transmission fluid, or reprogramming or replacing the TCM if necessary.

What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P0873 code?

You’ll need an OBDII scan tool, a multimeter to test wiring and voltage, and possibly a transmission pressure gauge for more advanced diagnostics.

Does the P0873 code mean I need a new transmission?

Not necessarily. The issue is often related to the pressure switch or wiring rather than requiring a full transmission replacement. Proper diagnosis is essential.

How much does it cost to repair the P0873 code on a Silverado?

Repair costs can range from $150 to $500 depending on whether the issue is a faulty pressure switch, wiring repair, or a more complex TCM problem.

Can low transmission fluid cause the P0873 code?

Yes, low or dirty transmission fluid can lead to improper hydraulic pressure and trigger this code. Always check fluid levels first.
