Code P0873 2014 GMC Sierra Description

The transmission fluid pressure switch, also known as the pressure switch manifold, is a multiple switch assembly made up of 3 normally open pressure switches and 1 normally closed pressure switch. Pressure switch 1 monitors shift valve 1 positioning, pressure switch 2 monitors shift valve 2 positioning, pressure switch 3 monitors shift valve 3 positioning, and pressure switch 4 monitors the position of the manual selector valve. The TCM provides a signal circuit to each of the pressure switches. The TCM constantly monitors the circuits to determine the position of the shift valves. The position of shift valves 1, 2, and 3 is controlled by 3 normally closed shift solenoids. When energized, shift solenoid 1 directs fluid pressure to shift valve 1, shift solenoid 2 directs fluid pressure to shift valve 2, and shift solenoid 3 directs fluid pressure to shift valve 3, which strokes the shift valves. When a shift valve is stroked, an exhaust passage is blocked and fluid pressure increases, closing the normally open pressure switch. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects that transmission fluid pressure switch 3 signal circuit is High when shift solenoid 3 is commanded ON for 1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0873 2014 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0873 mean on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

P0873 indicates a high voltage issue in the Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch 3 Circuit, which monitors hydraulic pressure in the transmission.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0873 in a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms include harsh or erratic shifting, the transmission being stuck in a single gear (limp mode), and the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P0873 code to appear on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty transmission fluid pressure switch, wiring or connector issues, a damaged transmission control module (TCM), or low or dirty transmission fluid.

4. Can driving with the P0873 code damage my 2014 GMC Sierra?

Yes, continuing to drive with this code can cause further damage to the transmission due to improper fluid pressure regulation.

5. How do I troubleshoot the P0873 code on my GMC Sierra?

Begin by checking the transmission fluid level and condition, inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, and testing the pressure switch with a multimeter.

6. How much does it cost to repair the P0873 code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs depend on the underlying issue but can range from $100 for wiring repairs to $500 or more if the pressure switch or TCM needs replacement.

7. Can a dirty or clogged transmission filter cause the P0873 code?

Yes, a clogged transmission filter can restrict fluid flow and cause pressure issues that may trigger the code.

8. Do I need to replace the transmission fluid pressure switch if I get the P0873 code?

Not always; the switch should only be replaced if testing confirms it is faulty. Other issues, such as wiring problems, might also be the cause.

9. Will clearing the P0873 code with a scanner fix the issue?

Clearing the code may turn off the warning light temporarily, but the issue will likely return unless the root cause is resolved.

10. Is the P0873 code related to low transmission fluid in a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Low transmission fluid can contribute to pressure issues that trigger the P0873 code, so it’s important to check and refill if necessary.
