Code P0850 Cadillac Description

The transmission manual shift shaft switch assembly, also known as the Internal Mode Switch (IMS), is a sliding contact switch attached to the manual shift shaft inside the transmission case. The Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch is integrated into the IMS and connects to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) lead frame through a short wire harness. The 5 inputs to the TCM from the transmission manual shift shaft switch assembly indicate the transmission gear selector lever position. This information is used for engine start enabling, engine controls as well as determining the transmission shift patterns.
The state of each input is available for display on the scan tool. The five input parameters represented are Signal A, Signal B, Signal C, Signal P (Parity), and Signal N (Park/Neutral Start Signal). Park/Neutral Signal is sent from the Park/Neutral switch directly to the Engine Control Module (ECM) and is used for engine start enable. The Park/Neutral Signal circuit is not connected to the TCM internally; the circuit uses the TCM as a pass-through connector only. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects the Park/Neutral switch signal equals 0 V, Low, when the IMS reports a Drive range.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0850 Cadillac Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0850 mean on a Cadillac?

P0850 indicates an issue with the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch Circuit, which monitors the transmission's position to ensure it is in park or neutral when starting the engine.

2. What are the common symptoms of a P0850 code in a Cadillac?

Symptoms may include the engine not starting, the transmission not shifting properly, a lack of gear indicator on the dashboard, or the Check Engine Light illuminating.

3. What causes the P0850 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty Park/Neutral Position Switch, damaged wiring or connectors in the circuit, or a malfunctioning Transmission Control Module (TCM).

4. Can a P0850 code cause transmission issues in a Cadillac?

Yes, it can lead to shifting problems or prevent the vehicle from starting if the system cannot detect the correct gear position.

5. How do you diagnose a P0850 code?

Diagnosis typically involves inspecting the PNP switch, checking for damaged or corroded wiring, testing the switch's continuity, and using a scan tool to monitor transmission data.

6. Can you drive a Cadillac with a P0850 code?

Driving may be possible, but it’s not recommended as the vehicle may experience transmission issues or fail to start unexpectedly.

7. How do you fix a P0850 code on a Cadillac?

Repairs may include replacing the Park/Neutral Position Switch, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, or reprogramming or replacing the TCM if needed.

8. How much does it cost to fix a P0850 code in a Cadillac?

Repair costs vary, but replacing the PNP switch typically costs $100 to $300, including parts and labor. Additional wiring or module repairs may increase the cost.

9. Can a dead battery cause a P0850 code?

While unlikely, low voltage or electrical issues from a battery problem could potentially contribute to the code if it disrupts circuit functionality.

10. Will clearing the code fix the P0850 issue?

Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the Check Engine Light, but the issue will likely return unless the underlying problem is addressed.
