Code P0843 2014 GMC Sierra Description

The Transmission Fluid Pressure (TFP) switch 1 is part of the control solenoid valve assembly, which has no serviceable parts. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) supplies a signal circuit to the TFP Switch 1. The TFP Switch 1 has an internal case ground. TFP Switch 1 is normally closed or LOW. When oil pressure is present at the TFP Switch 1, the switch is open or HIGH. The normally high clutch pressure control (PC) solenoid 2 controls pressure to the 3-5 reverse clutch regulator valve. The TCM monitors the TFP switch 1 to determine the position of the 3-5 reverse clutch regulator valve. When the 3-5 reverse clutch is commanded OFF, pressure is present on the TFP switch 1. When the 3-5 reverse clutch is commanded ON, the 3-5 reverse clutch regulator valve moves and pressure to the TFP switch 1 is exhausted through the 3-5 reverse clutch regulator valve. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects that the TFP switch 1 signal voltage remains HIGH after the 3-5-R clutch transitions from a LOW pressure state to a HIGH pressure state. The TCM counts each incident. The DTC sets when 35 counts are accumulated.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0843 2014 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0843 mean on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

P0843 indicates a high voltage issue in the Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch 1 Circuit, which monitors hydraulic pressure in the transmission.

2. What are common symptoms of the P0843 code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include harsh or erratic shifting, the transmission going into limp mode, reduced fuel economy, or the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P0843 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty transmission fluid pressure switch, damaged wiring or connectors, low transmission fluid levels, or a malfunctioning transmission control module (TCM).

4. Can low transmission fluid trigger the P0843 code?

Yes, insufficient transmission fluid can cause erratic pressure readings and lead to the P0843 code being set.

5. How do you diagnose the P0843 code?

Diagnosis involves checking the transmission fluid level and condition, inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, testing the pressure switch for proper function, and scanning the TCM for related trouble codes.

6. Is it safe to drive with the P0843 code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Driving with the P0843 code is not recommended, as it can lead to further transmission damage and unsafe driving conditions due to erratic shifting.

7. How much does it typically cost to fix the P0843 code?

Repair costs can range from $150 to $500, depending on whether the issue is with the pressure switch, wiring, or other components.

8. Can a software update fix the P0843 code?

In some cases, a TCM software update from a dealership may resolve the issue if it’s caused by a programming glitch.

9. How do you reset the P0843 code after repairs?

After repairing the underlying issue, the code can be cleared using an OBDII scanner or by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.

10. Does the P0843 code always mean the pressure switch is faulty?

No, the code could also be caused by wiring issues, poor electrical connections, or problems with the TCM. Proper diagnosis is essential.
