My 2004 Mazda 3 gave an error code of P0762 when shifting to 3rd gear (never shifted) then acted as if in neutral when shifting to 4th. I test solenoids & they were good. The solution was to replace the 3-4 clutch (called the direct clutch too). Because the Reverse & direct clutch are located directly behind the plate on the driver's side of the transmission, I did not drop the transmission. Did loosen the mounts somewhat. This cost me a total of $100 in parts because I replaced the 2-4 brake band too. Trans works like a dream now.

It has come to my attention that a large number of Mazda (FN4A-EL) automatic transmissions are simply replaced & the defective unit trashed. Given an accurate description of a problem I can identify the defective part & repair it. Many error codes like P0762 are oversimplified & mislead the mechanic. Removing & re-installing the transmission is the most difficult task, but attempting to repair the unit while installed Is extremely frustrating & almost as difficult. My recent post didn't take in the frustrations of removing & reinstalling the direct clutch's snap rings & bearings with limited space when the trans is installed in the car. Due to rapidly approaching 80 yrs old, I won't do that again. I will repair units brought to me in central Texas. Unfortunately I have only 1 way to test the transmission after repair, put it back in the car. I've identified 4 different things that can cause the P0762 code. All are easily repaired when the trans can be accessed easily.

You can clear the error code by briefly removing the positive battery terminal. The car will then work in the manual mode. If it gives you an AT code of P0762, when you go to 3rd, your direct clutch is bad. If the solenoid is bad you'd get that error in reverse too. Solenoid C provides pressure to both reverse & direct clutches. I think the piston in your direct clutch is leaking. A fully loaded direct clutch will cost you $60 on E-Bay & is much quicker than replacing the piston & clutch plates.

Just an added bit of information. Most of Ford's automatic trans for front wheel drive vehicles are made by Mazda. Nearly all parts are interchangeable, but you should check because some minor differences exist.

Just an addition on solenoids in Ford & Mazda transmissions. They are exactly the same, but labeled differently in the repair manual. I've never seen a bad solenoid in either the Ford or Mazda auto transmission, but keep a full set on hand just in case. The most likely failure in this transmission is the 3-4 clutch (direct clutch). located directly behind the transmission side plate on the driver's side.

My car wont shift for 2 nd to 3 rd gear. They told me the price would would be around 2250 . Please let me know how to fix it for cheaper price if you know thank you .

Sounds like your 3-4 (direct) clutch is bad. I suggest you take the transmission out to work on it. The reverse & direct clutch are directly behind that side plate on the driver's side. Sometimes the side plate bearing is damaged so you'd have to replace that too. Just buy a new one. I buy a preloaded reverse & direct clutch (the direct clutch & reverse clutch share some parts) & replace both at the same time. All these parts will run about $200 if you shop on ebay. This is a fairly easy job if you have any mechanical ability at all. Be sure to keep parts separated so you know what goes where. Several snap rings & very small roller bearing races are easily misplaced.

Hello ed, I am engineering student myself ... I am also trying to fix the car ...my car is mazda 6 2008... If possible I would also like to repair myself. The PN of your Mazda 6 transmission is FNR5 (Designates 5 speed Mazda 6 Trans). I suggest you buy a repair manual on that transmission. Google FNR5 disassembly on utube... they have some pretty good tear downs there. I tend to specialize in FN4A-EL transmissions. Ford uses those Mazda Transmissions too. The Mazda transmission's weak point is the 3-4 & reverse clutch & Planetary Carrier get starved of fluid causing it to over heat. I'll help when I can.

Buy some of those dental picks for removing snap rings & bearings. They'll save you time & frustration. They cost less than $10 on ebay.

Hi Ed, Hopefully this comment reaches you, I know this thread is old.
I have a 2004 Mazda 3 with what looks to be exactly as you described. The only thing I would add is that it's fine in Reverse and when in Manuel shift mode I can shift up to 2nd and then when upshifting into 3rd I get the AT light and the engine RPM doesn't change like it stays in 2nd gear, then it tries to shift into 4th but acts like it's neutral and revs instead of shifting to 4th. Should I jump to doing the fix you described? And not bother with the solenoid? I would like to do this fix and leave Trans in vehicle and deal with the frustrations and they come so I don't have to deal with dropping axles fluids etc. Thank you, Doug in Cali
