Code P0736 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The transmission turbine speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor are hall-effect sensors. The turbine speed sensor is mounted to the transmission housing and faces the reluctor attached to the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing. The vehicle speed sensor is mounted to the low and reverse clutch housing on 2WD, or transfer case rear case half on 4WD. The vehicle speed sensor faces a reluctor wheel attached to the transmission output shaft on 2WD, or a reluctor wheel attached to the transfer case rear output shaft on 4WD.
The TCM provides a 9 V reference circuit and a signal circuit to each of the sensors. As the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing and transmission output shaft or transfer case output rotates, the sensors produce a signal frequency based on the teeth on the reluctor wheel. The TCM calculates the transmission gear ratio based on the speed sensor signals and compares the calculated gear ratio to the commanded gear ratio.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects the calculated reverse gear ratio differs from the known reverse gear ratio for 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0736 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0736 mean for a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0736 indicates that the transmission's reverse gear ratio is incorrect, often due to a mechanical issue, sensor problem, or internal transmission fault.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0736 in a 2017 Silverado?

Symptoms include difficulty engaging reverse gear, slipping in reverse, abnormal shifting behavior, and the check engine light being illuminated.

3. What causes the P0736 code to appear in a Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include low transmission fluid, damaged or worn reverse clutch components, a faulty transmission control module (TCM), or a malfunctioning speed sensor.

4. Can I still drive my Silverado with a P0736 code?

Driving may be possible, but using reverse gear could be problematic or cause further damage. It's recommended to address the issue promptly.

5. How can low transmission fluid cause the P0736 code?

Low fluid levels can result in insufficient hydraulic pressure, preventing the reverse gear from engaging properly and triggering the incorrect ratio code.

6. How is the P0736 code diagnosed on a 2017 Silverado?

Diagnosis involves scanning the vehicle with an OBDII tool, inspecting transmission fluid levels, checking for mechanical wear in reverse components, and testing the speed sensors.

7. What repairs are commonly needed to fix code P0736?

Repairs may include refilling or flushing the transmission fluid, replacing a faulty speed sensor, repairing or rebuilding the transmission, or reprogramming the TCM.

8. Can a faulty speed sensor cause code P0736?

Yes, a malfunctioning speed sensor can provide incorrect input to the TCM, leading to an inaccurate reverse gear ratio reading.

9. How much does it cost to fix the P0736 code on a Silverado?

Repair costs can vary widely, ranging from $150 for a sensor replacement to $2,000 or more for a transmission rebuild, depending on the underlying issue.

10. What should I do if my Silverado shows a P0736 code?

Start by checking the transmission fluid level and condition, then have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to identify and address the root cause.
