Code P0733 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The transmission turbine speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor are hall-effect sensors. The turbine speed sensor is mounted to the transmission housing and faces the reluctor attached to the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing. The vehicle speed sensor is mounted to the low and reverse clutch housing on 2WD, or transfer case rear case half on 4WD. The vehicle speed sensor faces a reluctor wheel attached to the transmission output shaft on 2WD, or a reluctor wheel attached to the transfer case rear output shaft on 4WD.
The TCM provides a 9 V reference circuit and a signal circuit to each of the sensors. As the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing and transmission output shaft or transfer case output rotates, the sensors produce a signal frequency based on the teeth on the reluctor wheel. The TCM calculates the transmission gear ratio based on the speed sensor signals and compares the calculated gear ratio to the commanded gear ratio.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects the calculated gear ratio with 3rd gear commanded differs from the known 6th gear ratio for 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0733 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0733 mean on a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0733 indicates that the transmission control module (TCM) has detected an incorrect gear ratio for third gear, which could signal a transmission issue.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0733 in a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms may include slipping or harsh shifting in third gear, a loss of power while driving, decreased fuel efficiency, and the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P0733 code in a 2014 Chevy Silverado?

Common causes include low transmission fluid, a faulty shift solenoid, damaged transmission bands or clutches, or internal transmission issues.

4. Can driving with the P0733 code damage my Silverado?

Yes, driving with this code can lead to further transmission damage if the issue is not addressed promptly, especially if the transmission is slipping or overheating.

5. How can I diagnose the P0733 code in my 2014 Silverado?

Start by checking the transmission fluid level and condition, then use an OBDII scanner to confirm the code. Additional steps might involve inspecting the shift solenoids, transmission bands, and clutches.

6. Does low transmission fluid cause the P0733 code?

Yes, low or dirty transmission fluid can affect gear ratios and lead to the P0733 code. It’s one of the first things to check.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P0733 code on a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs vary depending on the cause. A fluid change might cost $100-$200, while solenoid or clutch repairs can range from $300 to $1,500. A full transmission rebuild may cost $2,000 or more.

8. Can a faulty shift solenoid trigger the P0733 code?

Yes, a malfunctioning shift solenoid can prevent proper gear engagement, causing the TCM to detect an incorrect gear ratio.

9. What should I do if my Silverado has the P0733 code?

Check the transmission fluid level and condition first, then have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and repair the underlying issue.

10. Is the P0733 code specific to third gear only?

Yes, the P0733 code specifically refers to an incorrect gear ratio detected in third gear. Other gears would trigger different codes, such as P0731 or P0734.
